How do I switch to Manual?

I know its a noobish thing to ask but help please?

You need the Technical Ring, automatically obtained upon leaving the Liger's Nest after defeating the Queen. Then, if I remember the 3DS controls correctly, it's either Down on the D-Pad or L+Down.
