"A Bumpy Ride Down a Flawed Game"

The eShop, for the 3DS, didn't get off to a very good start. Only five games made it out on opening day. Lucky for us, Nintendo is offering Excitebike to download free until July 6th. The title is solid as a free game, but after July 6th the question remains: Is the game worth $5.99?

Excitebike reminds me of an iPhone game; it works well if playing in short bursts. One gaming session will last a player 10-20 minutes. After three sessions the fun is over. There just isn't much packed into this small package. What was acceptable in 1985 is no longer acceptable in 2011, even if it costs significantly less.

The gameplay is simple, ride a bike around a track and try to beat the best time. The game contains two modes. In the first mode, the player races by himself. The second mode pits the player against other bikers. The game comes with five pre-made tracks, but the player can also make his/her own tracks to race on as well.

The customization of tracks may sound fun, but it is limited. There are only about ten different objects that players can place on a track. In addition, different tracks will accomplish no differentiation; the gameplay will stay the same. The game does nothing to change up the same formula.

The game is not worth getting for the 3D either. The most 3D in the whole game is on the menu screen. The game's old graphics have not been improved on at all. The only added feature is a sky above the bleachers, which doesn't matter at all to gamers.

The most annoying part of the game is the music. There are only two pieces of sound in the whole game, the opening music and the sound of the player's bike moving. That is it, nothing else. You can probably imagine that hearing the same thing over and over again for an hour would be an extreme annoyance.

The Verdict: Excitebike for the 3DS is great as a free download. But at full price, don't even bother. The game is not worth six dollars- there just isn't enough variation in the gameplay or tracks to make this an experience to keep coming back to. Here's to hoping that Nintendo will release some quality NES games in the coming months, Metroid, Zelda, and Mario wouldn't be a bad idea.
