Combat
=========================================================================

Context sensitive: press buttons as they show up on screen

A button: Mario Jump. This is used to increase the number of jumps in one
attack. As you land on his/her head pressing the A button just as the jump
connects will grant you another jump. This button will also have you jump
during enemy attacks. You can press it whenever you want to jump, but you'll
have to time it properly with the attack. (I'll have a section on enemy
attacks as well)

B button: Luigi Jump. This is used to increase the number of jumps in one
attack. As you land on his/her head pressing the B button just as the jump
connects will grant you another jump. This button will also have you jump
during enemy attacks. You can press it whenever you want to jump, but you'll
have to time it properly with the attack. (I'll have a section on enemy
attacks as well)

Enemy tell: This is what occurs right before they attack, but still during the
inital animation. This provides the player with whom the enemy is going to
attack. Each enemy has its own tell and will be better described in the Enemy
compendium

Dream World Combat
____________________________________________________________________________
So, Dream world combat is similar to regular combat, but more exciting.
Mario is powered by Luigi who can attack groups of enemies and deal extra
damage. Mario is the only one attacking during this time. This also means that
the group of enemies will attack you. In some cases they attack all at once.
During this time you can move up and down the battlefield by use of the circle
pad. The intention is that the group of enemies uses a formation to attack you
with. If you move to weak points of the formation ie. points that have the
fewest enemies stacked, you can either dodge or counterattack one without
getting hit yourself. They also attack one by one so you'll have to dodge each
attack. They move pretty quickly inbetween attacks so be prepared to think
quick.
As a side note, when you do press the A button to perform extra jumps during
your attack,it's a little difficult to tell when to press the A button. Mario
moves slower in Dream World so it takes a minute to get used to the timing.
Also the image of Luigi gets in the way.

| WALKTHROUGH /

                                     \ /
                                       \/

The game begins with the whole crew, including some of the castle crew,
boarding an aircraft towards an island. At this point in the game, you'll be
following a tutorial which can be semi-skipped when prompted. This very quick
fight ends with the ship plummeting to the island.

*************************PI'ILLO ISLAND***************************************
Pi'illo island item's:
22 coins
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said before this area is a tutorial so be prepared to learn stuff you
probably already know. But thats fine. I also talked to every single jumping
island greeter multiple times and found nothing of interest. It seems for now
you can only progress the tutorial. Your next task is a quiz given to you by
a yellow box with a moustache. The quiz has two questions:

________________________________________________________________________
========================================================================
QUIZ : 2 QUESTIONS : YES\NO
========================================================================
Question 1: Zis island is named PI'ILLO ISLAND
Answer: Yes\check mark
Reward: 5 coins
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Question 2: DR. SNEEZEMORE is the island's leader
Answer: No\X
Reward: 5 coins
=========================================================================
I attempted the quiz several times with the same two questions each time and
no different outcome.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the next area you have access to three yellow blocks to bash your head
into. One of the boxes is red and has an "M" on it. If you haven't played
recent Mario games on the gameboy then this block means that only Mario may
get whats inside. The other block is green and has a green "L" and is only
for Luigi. This room contains a total of 20 coins. The next small area also
contains four blocks and one of them can be hit multiple times. Thus far none
of the NPC's have had anything interesting or secret to say.

Moving on brings Mario to a fight with an enemy called a Gromba. This fight
isn't challenging since it's another tutorial fight. After you finish the
fight another fight ensues, but this time, there are two of them. This is
still an easy fight but if you need help, check out the monster compendium
to learn more about them.

As you follow the extremely linear areas, you come to another game that the
yellow block wants you to play. At this time, when Mario and Luigi put their
coins together I had 50 coins.

=============================================================================
COIN-UP
=============================================================================
This game consists of hitting blocks with both Mario and Luigi. This game is
very easy and can be done well before the time limit. Just hit the A button
and then the B button and repeat as fast as you can.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REWARD: 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x the number of coins Mario and Luigi have combined.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
______________________________________________________________________________

As I said before, I had 50 coins and I ended up with 150.

**********************PI'ILLO CASTLE******************************************
Pi'illo Castle item's:
5 coins
MUSHROOM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once inside the castle, you can get lots of info from the NPC's, but nothing
sercet or extra. There is an item shop and a gear shop where you can buy
stuff if you need to.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Item shop
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-UP MUSHROOM: Revives bro with half HP **** Cost- 50 coins

SYRUP JAR: Restores 20 BP **** Cost- 20 coins
==============================================================================

Discount Boots (6 Jump Power) **** Cost: 100 coins

Picnic Wear (9 Def) **** Cost: 70 Coins
So-So Wear (21 Def) *** Cost: 140 coins
______________________________________________________________________________

Also in the castle is the break room where you can get a MUSHROOM and 5 coins
from boxes. When you're ready, find the yellow moustache block and he'll
lead you into the next area. This small area moves quick. Talk to the
moustacheless block to progrees to the ANCIENT HIDDEN AREA. This is a small
amount of text, I know, but the beginning of the game moves very quick,
points you in the ONLY direction you can go, and is mostly to learn the
game's mechanics.

**********************ANCIENT HIDDEN AREA************************************
Ancient Hidden Area item's:
1-UP MUSHROOM: Revives bro with half HP **** Cost- 50 coins
MUSHROOM : Restores 30 HP **** Cost- 10 coins
Mush Badge- Restores 30% of each bro's HP
Starter badge- Restores 30% of each bro's HP
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moving on brings you to the ANCIENT HIDDEN AREA where you are pushed into a
battle with three Gromba's. At this time, I would suggest taking a look at
the Combat section and Enemy Compendium to learn battle tactics for using
both Mario and Luigi in battle and to give you more info about specific
enemies. I want to assure everyone reading that I will cover all of the
important encounters in the game when they arise and I may even update
sections if readers request it. So anyway, finish another tutorial battle and
continue! The next area has you jump a bunch which, if you didnt find out
already, you can jump. At the end of the room is a double block that you'll
have to hit with both Mario and Luigi at the same time. Another little
minigame will start.

=============================================================================
BLOCK ORDER (I totally made that up, does it actually have a name?)
=============================================================================
When you hit the double block a series of green or red blocks unfolds above
the original. You need to memorize the order that the blocks appear starting
from the bottom. Make sure you memorize from the bottom up. Then proceed to
hit the blocks in order of either red, Mario, or green, Luigi. From now on
I'll assume that when I say red or green, you'll know which plumber it
refers to.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REWARD: Pride in your skills
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
______________________________________________________________________________

The next area will be the first time you can walk into enemies. If you tried
to learn something then you'll remember that you can perform a pre-emptive
strike against the enemy by jumping on their head. I suggest jumping with
both characters at the same time to avoid jumping too far and having your
pre strike ruined. There will also be more info on this stuff in the combat
and helpful tips section of the guide (When it is put there that is :D).
You will also have the first chance to level up your characters. When you do,
make sure to read the description on the stat you'd like to spin the
roulette for. I suggest thinking about what you are good at when you level up
to make good choices on stat allocation. If you are confident that you can
dodge attacks, level up power or stash. These will maximize damage and keep
your health low with the intent you can dodge and kill quick. There will
be more helpful tips about stat allocation in the corresponding section
(Helpful tips). Ok, explore the area, kill ALL the baddies (Always do because
this is a game about leveling up and you might as well be ahead of the
curve), hit the signature (red and green) blocks, and head to the end of the
room to begin another mini game.

=============================================================================
ODD ONE OUT
=============================================================================
I liked this mini game as it was hard to tell the correct block to pick, but
still possible with concentration. Five blocks float above your head with
spinning pictures on them. The picture themselves are spinning and one of
them is spinning opposite the other four. I don't have any advice, you just
need to pick the opposite spinning block. Just concentrate on the direction
of one of the blocks and note which way it spins. Then focus on an adjacent
blockand note its direction.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REWARD: More pride
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
______________________________________________________________________________

Continue to the next are where you'll see a huge plus-sign shaped enemy horde.
Each enemy has three Grombas to fight. Although it seems to be quite a few
enemies, after fighting 6 or 7 of them, the rest disappear. Other than that,
lets move to the mini game.

=============================================================================
SWITCHAROO
=============================================================================
Three blocks appear above your head. One flashes and then they switch places
several times while increasing speed. Just watch the flashing block, which
does not flash while moving, and then pick the correct one.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
REWARD: Realization that pride isnt enough
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
_____________________________________________________________________________

You have no choice but to follow the story line and obtain a rock thing and
your first badges.Take the tutorial to heart and continue with life (I'll
have helpful tips on badges in the corresponding section of this guide). You
will then fight four new enemies. Look for Smoldergiest in the enemy
compendium to battle them correctly. Also, you'll learn how to use badges in
battle which will also be explained in the helpful tips section of my guide.
The battle doesn't take long. Afterwards you'll leave the room via the new
exit. Collect the MUSHROOM and beat the enemies on your way forward. Nothing
in the next area but some story and a scene and a trip into dream world.

**********************DREAMY PI'ILLO CASTLE***********************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so you can "swim" by repeatedly pressing the A button. This only lasts a
second though as you enter even further into the rabbit hole. This section
shows off the 2-D scrolling Dream World. This mode is more about platforming
and is very similar to the orginal Mario games. For now, follow the linear
path up, get the block to the right of the gate, then enter the gate by
pressing "up" on the circle pad. Once in the new area, a block with five coins
is at the far end of the room along with four gates. The plain gate will
return you to the starting area. The first gate with a picture on top leads to
a dead-end and a NUT. Return to see two more pitcure gates. They lead to the
same area, another three gate room. take either gate and then take the middle
gate there. A story scene happens and Luigi returns to the party.

Movin on, we see Peach being carried away by the enemy from the first fight in
the game. After he leaves the door contains a shop run by the moustache block
that contains the same items as the shop in the castle.

______________________________________________________________________________

Leave the shop and hit the ! block outside the door to fight a group of
Drombas. This fight is yet another tutorial on how the Dream world fights
work. If you want tips on this, that will be in the combat section of the
guide. After you teach them a lesson you've just been taught, grab a cool 50
coins, then continue your journey. Kill the baddies, descend the hill, grab
the yellow blocks and the signature blocks. The only way to go leads into a
battle against a group of DREAMY MARIOS (check the compendium for info on how
to beat these sexy plumbers). The battle concludes with Peach being swept
underground and a mysterious glowy thing telling you what to do. You'll be
instructed to break a nightmare shard which awakens the prince, Dreambert.
Everyone talks and then poof...

**********************PI'ILLO CASTLE******************************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have control, leave the room via the south exit. Head up the stairs
and ignore the guy under the floating box. You'll have to wait to see what it
does. Keep following the halls until you reach the lobby. The first thing
after the cutscene, go right across the room opposite of the door you just
left as it is the only place you haven't explored in the lobby (guards were
previously blocking it). This area is just the hotel. Explore the whole
thing to get lots of coins and a 1-UP MUSHROOM. When you are finished, head
outside which is due south.

*************************PI'ILLO ISLAND***************************************
______________________________________________________________________________

Begin by heading to the left side of the screen. If you look on your map,
you'll see to the left of the map you are on there is a portion to the north
you haven't explored (The crowd of greeters blocked your way). When you enter
you can grab the 1-UP MUSHROOM. You eventually reach MOUNT PAJAMAJA where you
can progress no further. As you circle the castle, you'll find a MUSHROOM and
find yourself back at the entrance to the lobby. Now you'll head south of the
castle to continue your quest. After comically crossing and then failing to
cross an obviously worn down bridge, Mario and Luigi find themselves in a dank
underground dungeon underneath the castle. It's very short, one box with some
coins, a new enemy (BLOATULA, check the compendium), and then a story scene
and you'll be back in the Dream World.

**********************DREAMY PI'ILLO CASTLE***********************************
Dreamy Pi'illo castle items:
NUT: Restores 15 HP to both Mario and Luigi **** Cost- 25 coins

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first thing to notice is that you can now go back and forth from the real
world to the Dream world. Jump into the color swirl or sleep on the pi'illo
to freely move back and forth between the two worlds. Clear the area to the
left, grab the block (STORCH enemy in the compendium as well). Continue to
find out yet another lesson in the game. This one deals with Luigi in the
Dream world. I'll have a little section on that in the mechanics section of
the guide, so now I'll assume you know how to use it. The next area has you
using Luigi's new powers to navigate the room. Explore and grab the few blocks
with coins and a NUT while moving to the bottom left of the screen. Repeat
for the next area. When you reach a room with nightmare shards, you'll be
given a number that you have to break and you'll have to use Luigi's new power
to break all 6 of the shards. Simple, but this IS still the tutorial.

*************************PI'ILLO CASTLE**************************************
Pi'illo castle items:
SUPER MUSHROOM: Restore 60 HP
____________________________________________________________________________

After you free the Pi'illo, you'll be given the next task: go to MUSHRISE
PARK, which is south. But first, you'll have to escape the dungeon.
In the next area, kill the BLOATULA and grab the MUSHROOM and the coins. You
will find yourself at another stone pillow where the only way to advance is
to enter the dream world and save the Pi'illo.

**********************DREAMY PI'ILLO CASTLE**********************************
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you enter, you'll be given the count of nightmare shards on the bottom
right corner of the screen. still more to learn. As we come to new things
from now on, I'll refer you to the appropriate section of the guide for info
and tips rather than explaining them in the middle of the guide. This will
be under game mechanics if you'd like to learn more. Also during this next
section of gameplay, we'll be breaking four nightmare shards. While you are
in Dream world you have tocycle to the map on the bottom screen if you want
to see it, otherwise it's Luigi's face. Using the map is extremely helpful for
finding the shards as it shows their location (In already explored areas)I
will refer to the map in Dream world often because it is the easiest way to
orient yourself in the2D areas. That being said, use the map to find the
shards in the room after you aquire the Luigitornado. There are only four of
them and they are all easy to reach. Don't forget to use your new power to
grab all the blocks, one of them has a SUPER MUSHROOM. Break those shards and
return home

*************************PI'ILLO CASTLE***************************************
Pi'illo castle items:
NUT: Restores 15 HP to both Mario and Luigi **** Cost- 25 coins
______________________________________________________________________________

Listen and read the story sequence about shards and such and talk to the blue
Pi'illo. He'll help you up to the next platform. When he does, you'll have to
press the A and B button for each plumber, but you'll need to do so quickly
because the window of time to press the button is short. Grab the back and
forth block and head into the next area. The areas are still pretty linear
with no secrets, but you'll find some enemies, a NUT in a Luigi box, and
another Pi'illo. Re-enter the Dream world.

**********************DREAMY PI'ILLO CASTLE***********************************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you'll have a mostly unassisted journey through the Dream world. You
won't have much choice but to head right to the top door if you look at your
map. Kill the baddies and grab the block. Again, head to the only door you
can reach. Now, head all the way to the right of the map to grab two blocks.
In the middle of the map are two rows of blocks that you can access with your
Luigi power. These all contain coins, but if you take a lift up to where you
can stand on the highest set of blocks and walk across them, you can find a
MUSHROOM in a block. Now you're going to go to the bottom left of the map and
exit there. Head left, grabbing the Mario block with a MUSHROOM inside.
Continue on to see the only shard you have to break. Use your Luigi power
to blow the blocks away and crack that shard.

*************************PI'ILLO CASTLE***************************************
Pi'illo castle items:

______________________________________________________________________________

Talk to the blue Pi'illo and have him help you. Hold left on the circle pad
and press the A and B buttons to reach the small platform with a changing
block that has coins and a block that has CANDY. Now have the Pi'illo help you
to the right side of the platform. Before heading into the green pipe, walk
around it to grab a block with some coins. The pipe leads to the other side of
the broken bridge and a plus sign area that leads to several places. Start by
opening the shop inthis area by going south and looking at the chest on the
ground.

He also has the option to have a Pi'i-latte which fully heals your HP and BP

Now, head west (or left) first towards WAKEPORT. You won't actually be able
to go into WAKEPORT, but just outside the log ridden road is a back and forth
block that has some coins. This area also has some unreachable blocks that
you'll have to wait to get. Now you can headsouth back at the plus sign area
towards MUSHRISE PARK.

*************************MUSHRISE PARK****************************************
Mushrise park items:
1-UP MUSHROOM: Revives bro with half HP **** Cost- 50 coins
______________________________________________________________________________

As a very confusing scene unfolds, you realize you'll have to gather some
wings to power a fountain to raise the flowers that lead you to the boss who
has the Pi'illo. To begin, opposite the now NOT working fountain is one that
works. Jump on the flowers and it leads to a 1-UP MUSHROOM. If you'll notice,
just above and right of the fountain sits some hammers which are going to help
us break these boulders. If you follow the bridge you'll come to a block guy
and one of the wings on a boulder. Just beyond that you'll find a Pi'illo
stone. Go to the Dream world.

*************************DREAMY MUSHRISE PARK*********************************

Travel to the right and dodge the rocks coming your way. They don't deal
damage, but they knock you back to the platform just prior to the rocks. Jump
your way to a ledge and a block that contains a 1-UP MUSHROOM. Directly after
this is another ledge with the shard...well that was easy.

*************************MUSHRISE PARK****************************************

1-UP MUSHROOM: Revives bro with half HP **** Cost- 50 coins
______________________________________________________________________________

Now have the Pi'illo help you up to a high ledge. Drop down and run the
bridge to the hammers. Now that you can use hammers you can break those
boulders. Remember that you cannot break a boulder unless you hit the crack,
otherwise nothing happens. Take a right to reach the boulder that has the
wing on top. Grab it and being heading towards the left of the map. Inbetween
the exit on the left and the exit below it is a boulder hiding the second
wing. Before you head back, break the remaining boulders just past the second
wing to grab some coins. Now head over to the broken fountain and talk to the
sweating block guy. He repairs it and you get to hit a red switch with your
hammer (right on the front of the fountain). Now that the flowers are back,
jump up them and break the boulder that blocks the left most exit.

Keep on truckin. In the next area break all of the boulders to get coins and
help a Toad see a great view. Talk to him to get a 1-UP MUSHROOM. Before you
jump down from the lookout with the Toad, position yourself to jump off at the
left most point of the top step (With the sign on it) and jump far left. You
can break some boulders and grab a MUSHROOM from a block. Head south to see a
Toad get attacked by two THORBS (Enemy Compendium) In this battle you'll
learn how to use the hammer while fighting. Check out the game mechanics
section to get some more info.

After the battle you receive Attack piece
number 1. These will be explained in its own section after the guide. I will,
however, still point you towards them during the guide becausethese pieces
will help you in the long run. After the cutscene with the Toad ends, move
left and jump on the wooden platform with a hammer and red arrow on it. Hit it
with the hammer and launch yourself to the platform containing the second
Attack Piece.

More to come...

|GROMBA - HP: 7? EXP: 3 COINS: 1
|____________________________________________________________________________

Rock kick: The Gromba will dash over and kick a rock at you. This attack
is dodged by jumping when the Gromba kicks the rock. Don't jump when he throws
the rock, you have to wait until he kicks it

Trip: The Gromba will trip towards you. You want to time it to land on
his head so you perform a counter-attack. When the Gromba trips, he does so
twice and the begins his roll. Jump as he lands from his second trip.

The Dreamy version of the GROMBA is the DROMBA. Same attacks, larger numbers,
purple

|
|SMOLDERGEIST - HP: uknown EXP: 5 COINS:
|_____________________________________________________________________________

Putting out the fire: Before you can damage them, you'll have to put out
their fire. Jump on them once to put out the fire although you will suffer 1
damage.

Fire Ring: The Smoldergeist will fire a ring of fires above and below the
characters (both characters, remember to jump with both buttons). This attack
is difficult to dodge, but you want to wait a moment AFTER THE FIRES ARE
CREATED. There is a delay in his attack once the fires appear so watch for it.

Roll: When his fire is out, a Smoldergeist will attack by rolling on the
ground, back and forth, multiple times. You can dodge his entire attack or you
can time your jumps to land him and inflict damage. This attack is slower than
you would first think, but still easy to dodge. Jump RIGHT BEFORE he begins
moving in a new direction and you'll land on him.

Spit Fire: Occasionally he will spit a purple fireball that bounces at a
character. To dodge watch for the exclamation (!!!!!) near his face. Jump
right when it leaves the screen

|
|DREAMY MARIO- HP: Unkown EXP: COINS:
|__________________________________________________________________________

Kamikaze- This attack begins with the Dreamy Marios just charging you one
at a time. The charge is pretty easy to counter, just jump over or on their
heads.

Meteor- At random points Marios will fly at a diagonal angle from the top
right of the screen. They fly fast and right after another so be quick about
multiple jumps.

Money run- An odd attack for sure, this one involves the giant purple gas
cloud running a line of three coins and a fireball towards the character.
Grab what you can and either jump or run above/below them to grab the cash.
Usually sends a MUSHROOM down too for healing

Endless runner: This attack moves Mario to an Endless runner style screen
where the player can move left and right while Mario runs forward on his own.
Rows of Dreamy Marios will run at you and just as always, jump to dodge. I
always get hit so let me know if you happen to dodge all the waves during the
attack.

|
|BLOATULA- HP: 12 or 13 EXP: 5 COINS: 4
|__________________________________________________________________________

String Fling: The spider will swing on a string and throw itself at you. So
far, when the spider lands, he can do one of three things. He can land and
bounce right over your head and you won't have to do a thing to dodge it. Or,
he will land and roll, requiring a jump to dodge or counter. Or or or, he will
instead begin swinging, twist on the string, and fling himself off backwards
and come from behind your character. This one slides along the floor so you'll
have to time your jump. I have not yet figured out the tell between the bounce
fling or the rolling fling so pay close attention

|
|STORCH- HP: EXP: 4 COINS: 3
|__________________________________________________________________________

Lit Fuse: The STORCH will light the ground on fire a few feet in front
of his target. The flame moves towards the player and increases in size. It's
a little difficult to dodge, but you need to jump right before it gets to you.
The flame is pretty tall so an early jump will get you burned. The STORCH can
start a few feet away OR right in your face, you'll just have to time it
correctly.

|
|THORB- HP: EXP: 16 COINS: 3
|__________________________________________________________________________

Ram: The THORB will charge a run a short distance from the character.
Pulling out your hammer and holding it until just before he hits your
character should so the trick.
