Getting Started Guide
This guide will help you figure out what you should do when you get your Nintendo 3DS.
1. Get screen protectors
This is by far the most important and the very first thing you should do. Don't even turn your 3DS on without getting screen protectors.
2. Take precautions to prevent screen scratching
Now you will need to prevent the bottom screen from scratching the top screen. There are two ways you can do this: extend the bumpers, or place a cloth between the screens every time you close your 3DS.
One way of extending the bumpers is to use the bumpers off of the charging cradle. Look on the bottom of the included charging cradle. You will see two bumpers on it that you can use.
Take these bumpers off of the charging cradle and place them on the top hinge, next to the inner camera and above the top screen. When you close your 3DS, these bumpers should touch the outer part of the START and SELECT buttons. Make sure they don't touch the printed words on the buttons (this will keep the START/SELECT buttons from being pressed when you close the 3DS) while still touching the raised edge on the bottom screen.
Before you apply pressure to the bumpers, make sure they are positioned correctly.
3. Configure internet settings and run the latest system update
Now that you've got screen protectors and bumpers attached to your 3DS, you need to run the latest system update.
Open System Settings and select Internet Settings. Next, select "New Connection", then select "Manual setup". Select "Search for an access point" and pick the internet connection you want to connect to. You may need a password before you can connect. It will now do a connection test.
4. Configure Parental Controls
Even if you don't have a kid, you should still set this up to prevent other people from setting it up without your knowledge.
First, open System Settings and select Parental Controls. At this point, it will ask you to select a PIN. Pick a PIN you will not forget.
After picking a PIN, it will ask you for an answer to a secret question of your choice. Remember the EXACT way you entered the answer; you will need this if you ever forget your PIN.
If you happen to forget both your PIN and your answer, you will need follow the on-screen instructions after selecting "forgot answer". These instructions involve calling a number in the Nintendo 3DS operations manual and giving the Nintendo representative a number displayed on the screen.
After selecting your PIN and secret answer, you can customize the restrictions.
5. Register your 3DS on Club Nintendo and get your free warranty extension
After you're done with all of the other setup, you should register your 3DS on Club Nintendo so you can get a free warranty extension. This is important incase you discover any defects in your 3DS after the normal warranty expires.
Go to http://club.nintendo.com
Select register and enter the registration fields. After you've registered, enter your 3DS serial number in the registration box on the main Club Nintendo page.
As long as the original 1-year warranty has not yet expired, you now have a free warranty extension beyond the normal 1 year warranty.
You are done with basic setup. Enjoy!
