When does the game save during fusion?

I briefly read about a trick during Fusion where you can eject your game cartridge and the fusion you just did will not save. When exactly does the game save? Could I try fusing all of my weapons together then eject the cartridge, or can I only reverse a fusion with this method one time?

It doesn't save at all until you back out the entire thing. Fuse all the weapons you want together. Don't like what you get then eject the game, press home and put it back in. I do it all the time and have awesome weapons because of it.
