Appendix B: Wallpaper & Flooring

So I heard you don't like your walls? Or your carpets? Well... this is serious. There isn't much we can do... Other than get new wallpaper and flooring!

This section covers all of the carpets and wallpapers in Animal Crossing: New Leaf--from the Alpine Wallpaper to the Western Fence. Appendix B does this by first going over the basics (which aren't all that numerous, to be honest), later covering the wallpaper/flooring-specific special visitor, Saharah, and finally the complete lists of both wallpaper and flooring. While this Appendix certainly as big as the others in this guide, it does cover important stuff with regards to dressing up your house. After all, what's a house without walls and nice carpet?

And, no, I'm not going to gleam some sort of joke from that :)

Wallpaper & Flooring Basics

Wallpaper and flooring are basically one and the same with regards to how they're handled and used. They're sold by your regular vendors: Nooklings and Re-Tail. They're also given by villagers for completing certain tasks. Finally, Saharah fills in most of the rest of the carpets/wallpapers. The rest are mostly event-specific and/or one-time-only.

Anyway, so, once you find some wallpaper or flooring, you can take it inside your house, and, from your inventory, plaster it in your house. The wallpaper and floorings you place in your house are automatically fitted to the size of the room, whether it be a 4 x 4 room or an 8 x 8 room. Wallpapers and floorings, like furniture, can be stored for later use. Most can also be ordered from your catalog. Nevertheless, the stuff that goes on your walls is very easy to master--just place, store, and continue.

Saharah

Saharah is a recurring special visitor to your town; you can expect to see her approximately once a week. You'll recognize her as a camel toting around a bag full of carpets and wallpapers. Anyway, so Saharah is equipped with some of the rarest and most valuable wallpapers and floorings in the game. When she drops by, she'll ask for a measly 3000 bell down payment to completely redecorate your main floor in a new, Saharah-exclusive, matching wallpaper and flooring pair. The 3000 bells is well worth the investment, and I recommend that you hold onto the carpeting and wallpaper as they are impossible to get anywhere else. You may not order the wallpaper or flooring if you sell it.

Saharah wallpapers and floorings are listed the lists below with their Soruce as "Saharah." Their purchasing price is listed as 0, but do remember that you do need those 3000 bells to get the wallpaper/flooring pair!

Wallpaper List

Here is the complete list of all wallpapers! Each and every wallpaper is enumerated along with its Source (where you can get it), its purchasing price, its resale price, its primary color, its theme, and its style. The latter-most is vital for the HHA (see Appendix P: Happy Home Academy & House Expansions for more on that). Moreover, I have some specific notes about some of the weird things you might see in the following table below. Finally, I have organized everything alphabetically, meaning that you need to know the first letter or two of your wallpaper before you can find it. Happy wallpaper plastering!

  • Island items have an "M" by the price to denote that they will cost medals instead of bells. For more on the island (and its medals!), check out the Island appendix (Appendix O: Island).
  • Re-Tail items come from other villagers placing this item for sale at random intervals.
  • If the item costs 0, it cannot be ordered. Period.
  • Some Nooklings Shop items have a time period in parentheses--though the exact days vary, look for the item at some point during that time frame.
  • N/A signifies that there is no entry for that category.
  • Multiple entries are denoted by forward slashes.
  • For more on Saharah, check out the Saharah section in this Appendix.

Appendix D: Fish

Fishing yields one of your best sources of income: fish! Many fish are worth more than 10000 bells individually, but the more common fish are often only a few-hundred bells. While fish are more high-maintenance to catch than bugs (see Appendix E: Bugs), they can be more rewarding. This section covers everything from a Fishing: How-To to The Fishing Calendar. More will likely be added later--let me know if you would like any information specifically added to this section via Contributing.

Fishing: How-To

Firstly, let's talk about the Fishing Rod itself. The Nooklings will sell it at their shop from time-to-time for 500 bells. You can also obtain the Fishing Rod from Isabelle at the beginning of the game. Finally, there are silver and golden Fishing Rods that give you more time to react when reeling in your fish.

Anyway, so what about fishing itself? Well, it's rather straightforward; you approach the body of water in which you want to fish, press A to throw your bobber out there, wait for a fish to notice your bobber, and press A again once the fish bites. Yep, that easy! The main problems you'll have with regards to fishing are (a) angling and (b) reaction time. Some fish--especially the rarer ones--will require very quick reaction time. Other fish are slow to leave, and they usually are worth next-to-nothing.

So let's address the first concern: angling. No, not the fishing angling--the geometric angling. Fish show up as dark shadows in the water, so you need to line yourself up so that, when you cast your line, your bobber will land right in front of the fish. This involves a lot of guess-and-check, but you have to remember that the bobber will always fly the same distance from your line to the water and that the fish can be as blind as it wants. Some fish will only notice bobbers literally right in front of it; other fish will notice bobbers that are practically behind it. You need to just keep trying until you catch the attention of the fish.

Otherwise, fishing is rather straightforward. If you're having trouble, use the following advice to have a better time catching the fish:

  • Turn on audio! You can actually hear the audio before the bobber goes under, so it's a good idea to either have headphones set up or have the volume up significantly. I basically cannot catch some of the rarer fish without audio.
  • Fish only bite five times! Fish in Animal Crossing: New Leaf will only bite five times. If they've nibbled four times, you know they're coming the fifth time!
  • Don't let nerves get to you! The best way to circumvent this is to just imagine that every fish is a Sea Bass--or that you probably don't even need the money after reading the Making Money section :)

Fish List

This is the list of all fish obtainable in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Fish are organized by the order in which they appear in your Encyclopedia. One horizontal row in the following table is equal to a vertical column in your Encyclopedia; for example, the second row in the table is equal to the second column in your Encyclopedia.

Anyway, the following table is easy to interpret. The fish's location is generally easy to understand; among the few weirder ones, "Waterfall" denotes the area where the waterfall conjoins the river and the ocean, "Rivers/Ocean" denotes the mouth of the river, and "Holding Ponds" denote the small ponds completely separate of the river. Finally, the Re-Tail value is obviously slightly higher than the Nookling's value, and the Re-Tail value listed is devoid of any ordinance tampering. To find out when these fish are catchable, check out The Fishing Calendar.

The Fishing Calendar

Want to know what fish are out? You're in the perfect spot to map out which fish are going to be out when! This calendar details what fish are out at what times during what months.

Fish work on a relatively predictable and easy-to-learn schedule. In the fish world, the calendar is run by (a) what month it is and (b) what time it is. Obviously, the year is divided into twelve months. Each of these twelve months has their own section in the area below. The 24-hour period of a day is then divided into four periods of not-so-equal length. There is the morning (4am to 9am), the afternoon (9am to 4pm), the evening (4pm to 9pm), and the night (9pm to 4am).

Hence, the calendar is split up into these periods. All fish listed in a particular timeslot will be available at that time on that month. Most fish are listed more than once as they are available at multiple time and month combinations. Some fish are available at all times and all months.

Happy fishing!

Appendix E: Bugs

So you want to catch some bugs?

Welcome to the Appendix that tells you all about bugs (Bug List), when they're out (The Insect Calendar), and the weirdest tricks you'll need to conquer the game (Bug-Specific Info) and Bug-Catching: How-To). Bug-catching is often more lucrative than fishing at night during the summer, but fishing outclasses bugs at most other times. For more on the monetary aspects, check out the Making Money section.

Bug-Catching: How-To

Bug-catching is usually much easier than catching fish, especially considering the lack of reaction time required to catch most bugs. Of course, there are a few insects that are excruciatingly hard to catch, but those are covered in Bug-Specific Info.

First, let's talk a bit about the Net itself. It is sold by Nooklings for 500 bells. There are also Silver Nets and Golden Nets that make it easier to catch bugs; their radius is noticeably bigger, so you can catch most bugs more easily.

So what about catching bugs themselves? Discounting bug idiosyncrasies, you basically want to walk up to them and press A to swing your net--it's that easy. Of course, there are a few other options; you can hold the A button to "crouch" and "sneak up" on bugs. This feature does work, and bugs are less likely to fly away or get scared by someone sneaking up on them. Generally, a lot of bug catching is dependent on the bug, so you need to improvise on-the-fly. I highly recommend that you have strategies for different types of bugs.

Bug-Specific Info

This section details information about certain bugs that are harder to catch than others. Some of the advice in this section can be highly useful, so I suggest you read it if you're having trouble with any of these bugs!

Bee

The Bee used to be one of the most annoying bugs to catch in Animal Crossing; luckily, it has been nerfed significantly in Animal Crossing New Leaf so that you can catch it with relatively little effort. The following describes those efforts.

Bees are found by shaking trees. Usually, in one given town, there are five beehives, meaning that there are five chances to catch a Bee before you have to restart. Anyway, let's talk about preparations: you want to make sure you have your net as the first item when you press your d-pad. This means that you want to equip your net, unequip it via v (down) on the d-pad, and remain unequipped. Once you locate a tree with a beehive in it, run to the south, if possible. Running south gives you more preparation time as the bees come toward you. Once you've put a fair amount of distance between you and the bee (usually 1-2 seconds of running), equip your net and face the beehive. Listen for the bees to start moving. Once they do, watch for them to appear on screen and immediately swing your net as soon as they are visible.

If done correctly, you should catch a bee. Do note that this method isn't foolproof.

Another method that is easier for those with slower reaction times but less reliable overall is to run north once you spot the beehive. After a few seconds of running, go to the menu and equip your net. Once the bees start flying at you, you can exit the menu and start spamming A, attempting to catch the bee. With some luck, you'll have hit A at the right time and caught a bee! Thanks to Ozric42 for bringing this method to my attention! :)

Dragonflies

This section primarily concerns the Banded Dragonfly and the Giant Petaltail.

The two dragonflies enumerated above are both some of the rarest and fastest dragonflies present in the game; the Petaltail is also very lrage. Being fast dragonflies, they can be difficult to catch. Generally, if you're dragonfly hunting, it's a good idea to go searching without equipping your net. Bandeds and Petaltails tend to get easily disturbed by nets, and they will scram ASAP if they see one. Once you're in position to get one, pull out your net and swing! Other methods to catch these dragonflies include running them into the cliff and randomly swinging/hoping.
