Introduction

The island is a place you can visit in Animal Crossing: New Leaf shortly after starting the game. For a mere 1,000 bells, you can have Kapp'n take you to the island from the dock in your town. You can easily make up that 1,000 bells by catching bugs and fish and collecting fruit and putting it in the take-home box, but that's not what this guide is for. Talk to the girl behind the counter and you can go on a selection of randomly selected tours, which are like minigames. You have a limited amount of time to complete a task, and depending on how you do, you get medals which can then be used to buy items in the island store. At first, you can only choose from a small selection of tours, but once you progress in the game further, you can choose from a larger selection.

This guide deals with all the tours you can encounter and the medals you can earn from each.

Tools

Essential to touring on the island are the tools. On tours you will be using the shovel, fishing rod, bug net, slingshot, and hammer. This section deals with how to use these items.

Press A to swing the net and catch any bug in front of you. Press and hold A to put the net in ready position, allowing you to walk slowly up to a bug. Release A to swing the net. The net has pretty far reach. Walking or running near almost any bug except the butterfly and dragonfly will make it fly away.

Press A to cast the line. It always goes the same distance every time, so use that to your advantage when trying to angle your line correctly. Once the hook is in the water and a fish sees it, it will start to nibble on it, until, after at most 4 nibbles, the fish will bite it and the bobber will dip underwater. Quickly press A once, and, if done correctly, your character will start struggling to get the fish out of the water, and after a second or two, will pull the fish out of the water. Pulling a fish out of the water makes all fish nearby swim away.

It helps to fish with the volume turned up. When the bobber goes underwater it makes a distinct sound, slightly before the animation. Whenever you hear that sound, press A.

Press A to hit whatever is in front of you with the hammer. Simple as that.

Press A to dig the shovel in the nearest possible dig location in the direction you're facing. The area is divided up into a grid, and you can only dig holes in these grid sections. For example,

_ _ _
_ _X_
_ _ _

If you are where the X is in the figure above, and the grid spots are where the _ are, and you are facing northwest, you will dig in the middle spot in the top row.

It's kind of hard to explain; it's best to just see for yourself.

Press and hold A to ready the slingshot, and release it to fire to hit anything above you. You'll want to stand directly on the shadow or a bit below it to hit a balloon. While you have the slingshot in ready position, the trees near the bottom of the screen disappear.

Wet Suit

Though technically not a tool, I am including it here because the instructions for its use don't change based on what tour you are on.

While next to the water and facing it, press A if you are not holding any other items to enter the water. Use the circle pad to change direction, and press A repeatedly to swim. Press Y to dive to go for the dark spots in the water. Your character can't stay underwater forever, though, so eventually he/she will come back up for air. The longer your character is underwater, the faster your character swims. If your character gets a sea creature, he/she automatically surfaces. Otherwise, you can resurface yourself by pressing Y again. Your character changes direction much more quickly while underwater.

It is not necessary to hold the circle pad in the direction you are moving.

Some sea creatures swim very quickly away from you. Try to get as close as possible to them before you dive. While chasing them, they will always move away from you, so you can lead them away from unwanted areas. Sea creatures will outright disappear if they get to close to the beach, and they can, and will, swim outside of the outer boundary, out of your reach. For example, if you are in the water north of the island, and you see a dark spot close to the northern boundary, north of you, swim north, past the sea creature, then dive, so you actually land above the sea creature. That way it won't swim out-of-bounds.

Getting stung by a jellyfish will make you unable to move for about 10 seconds. Twirl the circle pad, though, and you'll only be stunned for 5 seconds.

There are two strategies for finding sea creatures with the Wet Suit. I have found success with both strategies.

Strategy #1: Run along the beach with the volume turned up. If you see or hear bubbles in the water, enter the water and swim towards the bubbles/dark spot, and dive to get it.

Strategy #2: Swim in the water, circling the island, going for any dark spots/bubbles you may see. Having the volume turned up may help, so if you hear any bubbles you can swim for them. Try to stay halfway between the beach and the outer boundary so you can see as much water as possible.

The Tours

Each tour uses a tier system to determine how many medals you get. Meet a certain requirement, and you may get an award (Gold, Silver, or Bronze), which determines how many medals you get for the tour. You don't actually physically get the award; it's just the game's fancy way of telling you what tier you were and how many medals you got. Unfortunately, you don't get any additional medals for exceeding an award requirement. For example, some tours require you to collect a certain number of bugs. Catch twice the number to get a Gold, but catching any more will not net you more medals.

Also, the tier levels don't change as the tour moves up in difficulty. For example, in the Easy Scavenger Tour, the minimum requirement for a Gold is to finish with 2 minutes remaining or higher. The higher difficulty versions of that tour still have a minimum requirement of 2 minutes remaining or higher to get a Gold.

I have tested all the tours myself for the requirements for each award, and the number of medals you get for each award. However, I am not 100% sure of the requirements for the tours that count the bell value of the fish/bugs you collect, since it is difficult to control the bells you get. However, I have compared the requirements with tours that have a similar award system, so I've made my best guess. If you find something wrong, please let me know.

The tours change every night at midnight. Some of the tours from the previous day remain unchanged.

The tours are not random. On any given day (based on the date in Animal Crossing), everyone has the same tours. Whether or not the tours follow a predictable pattern in their appearance remains to be seen.

There are 64 tours in all.

  • In-game description: A fishing tour that tasks you to find ancient fish in the river of a tropical island. Good for skilled anglers!
  • Tips: Go for any large fish in the river, as those will be the ones you'll want. Because this tour's focus is those rare fish, they will be much more common than usual.

Beetle-Hunting Tour

  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: 1 star
  • Description: Catch 3 beetles.
  • In-game description: Dynastid and stag beetles are popular, and this tour wants to see you snag the most! Beginners welcome!
  • Tips: Beetles always appear on the trunks of trees. While you can catch the large rare beetles on the palm trees at the beach, those are much harder to catch and it's easier to just focus on the trees in the grass. Avoid running in this tour so you don't scare away any beetles.

Bug Hide-and-Seek Tour

  • Time: 7 minutes
  • Difficulty: 3 stars
  • Description: Catch 5 bugs. You're looking for centipedes, pill bugs, walking sticks, and mole crickets.
  • In-game description: Ready for a tough challenge to find mysterious bugs on a tropical island? Then sign up for this advanced bug tour!
  • Tips: This one isn't too hard. Centipedes and pill bugs can be found in rocks; just hit a rock with your shovel and a centipede or pill bug will probably come out. You will know a bug came out of a rock because there is a distinct "squishing" sound when a centipede or pill bug comes out. Walking sticks are found on tree trunks, so always be keeping an eye on those tree trunks and walk slowly with your net raised when you see one. Mole crickets are buried underground, so you need the shovel to dig them out. However, there are no visual cues to tell you that one is nearby; they do make a kind of whirring sound when you get near though. I don't recommend going for mole crickets because you'll end up wasting lots of time just trying to find them.

Easy Balloon-Hunt Tour

  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: 1 star
  • Description: Get 20 points by shooting down balloons with your slingshot. Round balloons are worth 1 point, while the bunny balloons are worth 3 points.
  • In-game description: Looking for an excuse to pull out a slingshot and pop some balloons? Then this tour is for you! Beginners welcome!
  • Tips: Every time the wind changes, new balloons spawn, but approximately no more than 8 balloons can be on the map at any one time, so sometimes less or no balloons spawn depending on how many balloons are already on the map. The wind changes every 30 seconds, then every 20 seconds starting at 3:00 left. If you get all the balloons and are waiting for the next wave, try to stay near the center of the map so you can access any edge of the map quickly. Balloons will never spawn from the top or bottom; they will always spawn from the direct left or right, or one of the four corners.

Easy Hide-and-Seek Tour

  • In-game description: Enjoy a slow-paced hide-and-seek with the people on the island! Beginners can participate without worry.
  • Tips: To win you must talk to each animal in its hiding place. Pick a route to walk through the map so you cover everything in the most efficient way. The animals will be hiding behind trees or houses, and will occasionally tilt left or right to look out. It helps to press Up on the D-pad in deep forested areas to see, because the trees near the bottom of the screen disappear from view so you'll be able to see behind them. Otherwise you can keep an eye on the topmost trees on your screen, because you can see behind those much more easily because the leaves aren't in the way. Easy Item-Matching Tour

  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: 1 star
  • Description: Match items are buried in a 3x4 grid.
  • In-game description: Get out those shovels and start digging for matching items! Beginners are more than welcome for this tour!
  • Tips: Start by choosing one of the top-most corners and unburying that item. Then work your way downward, unburying each item. If you don't get a match, make a mental note of the item you just unburied and proceed down the column. Once you reach the end of the column, work your way up the next column, and so on. If you happen to make two mental notes of the same item, just remember the two locations that match, instead of the item names. If you find, say, 2 or 3 item pairs of an item you aren't looking for, bury the item you are currently looking for and match the items up. To bury the item that you are currently looking for, dig a hole and the game will ask if you want to bury the item.

Easy Labyrinth Tour

  • Difficulty: 1 star
  • Description: Collect 5 of a particular type of fruit.
  • In-game description: Run around a natural maze and hunt for fruit. Can you beat the clock? Beginners are welcome on this tour!
  • Tips: Go for the lower paths first, so you can see a little of what's above so you can avoid wasting time. Try to remember which paths you've taken. Sometimes the bushes obscure your view of the fruit. If you ever need to turn around, instead of rapidly pushing the circle pad in the opposite direction, smoothly make a "U-turn" with the circle pad. This faster method of turning around will prevent your character from screeching to a halt and changing directions.

For example,

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
X _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
S _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

If S is you, _ is a bush, and the X is a fruit you are not looking for, you know not to go to the right.

Easy Ore-Hunter Tour

  • In-game description: Are you into digging for ore? Then grab your shovel and get busy on this beginner tour to find some ore!
  • Tips: Try to pick a route through the map that will have you cover the entire thing in the most efficient way possible. You want to try to hit all the rocks. Pick up all ore you come across until your pockets are full. Then look at your pockets and count how many of the 3-point ore you have. If you have 4, you are done. Otherwise, continue looking for more 3-point ore, and when you find one, replace one of the 1-point ore in your pockets with that 3-point ore. Once you collect 4 pieces of the 3-point ore, you are done.

  • Tips: Furniture will only be found in the houses, never in the trees or lying on the ground. Go to the nearest house and, once inside, check your list and memorize what's on it. If you are already familiar with what some/all of those pieces of furniture look like, then great. Elite Balloon-Hunt Tour

The wind changes every 30 seconds, then every 20 seconds starting at 3:00 left. • Because this is 3-star difficulty, there are lots of trees and pitfalls in this one, so watch your step. Never walk behind a tree so that you cannot see where you are walking. I like to walk close to the river, especially north of it, so I can easily see where I am walking and trees don't obscure the view. It should be noted that using the slingshot does allow you to see behind nearby trees.

  • In-game description: Enjoy a unique style of advanced gardening! Open only to those who have high confidence in their abilities!
  • Tips: It should go without saying that you should only go for the type and color of flower that Tortimer tells you. Once you get 16 flowers, head back to the garden and stand 1 square away from each of two edges, and plant 9 flowers. This should fill a 3x3 square of flowers, with 2 edges of this square touching the edge of the garden. Then move your character toward an open space in the garden and plant 6 flowers. What should be left is two rows of 5 spaces each. Go collect 9 more flowers, then plant your final 10 flowers in these two rows. Try to plan your route through the map so you cover as much area as possible without going through a section twice.

  • Tips: Try to pick a route through the map that will have you cover the entire thing in the most efficient way possible. You want to try to hit all the rocks. Pick up all ore you come across until your pockets are full. Then look at your pockets and try to determine which type will be the mystery bonus ore. Make note of the ore that could be the bonus ore, and continue searching, continuing to mentally eliminate potential bonus ore once you find more than two. If you find ore that is worth 3 points, open your pockets and drop one of the other ores that you know is not the 10-point ore (as replacing it when you pick up the 3-point ore takes too long because of the text) and pick up the 3-point ore.
