"A fun and addicting puzzle game"
The Nintendo Entertainment System has always been a great console for a variety of top quality games for all the genres. For instance, the strategy genre had such great games as Nobunga's Ambition and Destiny of an Emperor, and the beat em up genre had Double Dragon and Renegade, among others. The puzzle genre also had great games, ranging from the addictiveness of Tetris to the great gameplay of Klax. But also made for the Nintendo Entertainment Systsem (as well as arcade) was an underrated gem called Q*Bert. Q*Bert featured everything a puzzle game needed to be successful: great gameplay, colorful graphics, and good music. The only problem with the game was the somewhat difficult to use controls, but with four different control layouts to choose from its very easy to find one that's right for you. Basically, the game has you going around jumping on squares trying to turn them into different colors. Great game.
Graphics (8.7/10): The graphics in Q*Bert are very colorful, which is important in this game. You see a cube with a certain color, the blocks soon turn color when you jump on them, etc. The Q*Bert himself is very good looking, and the enemy designs are some of the best on the NES. The graphics are very colorful and very good.
Music/Sound (9.1/10): The music featured in the game is very kiddy in nature and fits the kiddiness of the game perfectly. The sound effects are great as well, ranging from the sound of Q*Bert falling off the edge to Q*Bert running into an enemy and dying. Great music and sound effects.
Gameplay/Control (9.2/10): Actually the gameplay can be very addictive, but the bad controls could decrease the gameplay experience by quite a bit. The gameplay goal is this: jump around from sqaure to square, changing the color of the square when you jump on it. When all the squares have changed to the color, you move on to the next round. But the enemies do not want to make it so easy. Great gameplay.
Replay Value: Medium
Challenge: Very High
Overall (8.9/10): Overall great game.
