Star Wars Racer: Revenge is the sequel to a fun game for the N64. In terms of look and gameplay, the two games are near-identical, but Revenge falls short on several counts. Let's take a look.
The graphics in Revenge are plenty PS2-worthy. When your Pod explodes, you can watch the debris flying everywhere instead of just puffing into a big ball of flame like the first game. The game is prone to slowdown when there are a lot of racers on your screen and sometimes when boosting. It's not a big problem, but large enough to warrant a 9.
Your favorite Star Wars themes return in Revenge, and this time they're styled to fit your situation. When you're rabidly fighting for position inside a pack of racers, a fast, heart-pounding melody is playing, while when you're coasting out in front you have calm silence, nothing but the humming of your engines.
Revenge plays pretty much exactly like its predecessor. The element of customizing your Pod still is in the game, but it really doesn't add much to the game and feels more like a last-minute add-on. The game would have been much better if the customization element had been more immersive. Also, Sebulba's cool flamethrower from the first game is gone.
Each track has four goals: A) Win, B) Beat best lap time, C) Beat best track time, and D) Beat best KO count. By winning races you unlock the shadowed characters in the main selection screen. Beating a Tournament with Sebulba rewards you with Episode 1 Sebulba, an upgraded version. Beating time and KO records unlocks the secret characters: Episode 1 Anakin, Watto, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader. There are also some nifty art galleries you can open up.
However, the game gets VERY repetitive. The only way you can unlock new characters is by beating the SAME thirteen tracks over and over again. This is about half the number of the first game. By the time you're ready to start beating records and getting secret characters, your racers are so mind-bogglingly powerful that you can simply run right through the other competitors. This is where the gameplay hits a brick wall.
Well... Pretty much nothing. There is some plot, but, like the customization, it just feels tacked-on. It's not really necessary anyway; this is a racing game.
The default scheme is basically like the N64 game, with everything you need right there. There is a very cool alternate control scheme in which each stick controls an engine; pushing each stick forward accelerates each engine. This takes some getting used to, though.
Star Wars Racer: Revenge is a solid game, but gameplay issues hurt its score. I prefer the first Racer to this one - Revenge is a disappointment. Unless you're a real SW fan, I suggest a rental for Revenge. That's enough time to get everything anyway.
