Review by Psycho Penguin

"There isn't anything NEW about this game..."

The Adventure Island series has always been one of my favorite video game series to play, ever since I first played the original Adventure Island on the NES many many moons ago, back when I was a wee little McFadden. My favorite Adventure Island game has always been the original, even with all the new and supposedly improved sequels out. There was one game I was really expecting to be great and change my mind about the whole series. That game? New Adventure Island.

I read a lot about this game many, many moons ago and I expected it to be a great game, mainly because it sounded like it delivered the same old classic game play that made me enjoy the series so much to begin with, but with delivering innovative new ideas as well. So, when I got my Turbografx console from my cousin about a week ago, one of the first games I wanted to get was New Adventure Island.

So, lo and behold I go to the pawn shop the other day, and I see a box of about 10 Turbografx games. I pay 40 bucks for the box and go home. I open up the box. Double Dungeons. Air Zonk. And lo and behold, right there in the box is New Adventure Island! The only game I wanted more at the time was Air Zonk. Sadly to say however, that once I played the game I was rather disappointed and let down by the whole playing experience.

Yes, New Adventure Island is one of the most disappointing games I have played. Let me start off by explaining the graphics in the game. When I first saw the graphics in this game, the game looked rather cool. The graphics seemed to be rather colorful and pretty. And for the most part, they were. I especially enjoyed the rather colorful backgrounds of the game, but the game seemed a little too much like Super Adventure Island in terms of graphics for my tastes. Yes, this game looks a lot like Super Adventure Island. Not that Super Adventure Island necessarily looked bad (it didn't), I just expected something a bit different, that's all.

The worst feature of this lackluster game is the terrible music featured in the game. This has to be one of the most annoying soundtracks I have heard in a long while. The music is annoying and very repetitive, more so than in any other Adventure Island game. The Adventure Island series has always featured rather repetitive music in my opinion, but this game definitely takes the cake. It gets VERY annoying after a while and deters from the playing experience A LOT, and that is not a good thing at all. Sound effect wise, I was rather puzzled by the lack of any voice acting or ''real'' sound effects.

Game play wise, New Adventure Island is not new at all. In fact, if you have played any of the games in the series, this is exactly the same kind of game. Collect weapons and fruit, kill enemies, find dinosaur friends to hang out with, rinse and repeat. Now, there is nothing wrong with this kind of game, but it does get rather boring after a while, and I did want this game to be somewhat new and refreshing, but it turned out to be nothing but a stale Super Adventure Island rehash. Yes, you can call this game Super Adventure Island: Turbografx style, because that is all that this game really is. It is disappointing to me, also, because I wanted it to be so much different than it turned out to be.

So, there you have it. This is nothing more than Super Adventure Island for the Turbografx 16. They call this game new, so you would expect this game to be somewhat new, right? Wrong! This is the second worst game in the series in my opinion (someone please remove all thoughts of that horrible Super Adventure Island 2 from my porno infested mind now please. Thank you) I would pick up this game only if you're an Adventure Island freak like me, otherwise you would be better off spending your valuable gaming time elsewhere.
