Welcome to my FAQ for Lunar Lander. Since the game has you continuously trying
to land your Lunar Lander until all of your fuel has been used up, there is no
walkthrough per se. Instead it will be broken up into the game itself and
strategies for survival. Input is appreciated along with constructive
criticism. If you wish to e-mail me thoughts on this FAQ, better ways of doing
things, other strategies, etc., feel free. Make sure you put Lunar Lander as
the subject. If you don't, I'm liable to discard the e-mail as spam.

| 5.  OVERVIEW |===============================================================
+==============+

Lunar Lander was Atari's first vector game. It created a realistic sense of
having to actually land on the moon. With its use of gravity and the always
dwindling supply of fuel, the game was actually ahead of its time in some
respects. Another thing that Atari did was to allow the player to "buy into"
the game. This meant that when their fuel supply got low, all the player had
to do was to insert another quarter and continue onward. Lunar Lander was
following on the trend of space-type games after the success of Space Invaders.
The game also featured degrees of difficulty. Once a player had gotten good at
landing their Lunar Lander at one difficulty level, they could go for the next
level. This lead to a high replay value since this, in essence, created four
different games. Unfortunately, Asteroids also came out at this time. Due to
the demand for cabinets to put the Asteroids game in, a lot of Lunar Lander
cabinets ended up being converted to Asteroids cabinets. Good luck in landing
on the moon.

| 6.  THE GAME |===============================================================
+==============+

Lunar Lander is a two-dimensional, vector game. You will start out with your
Lunar Lander floating above the moons surface. The effects of gravity will
start you into a downward direction. On the ground are landing pads. These
pads have a bonus under them that is directly relational to the size and
location of the landing pad. Your job is to maneuver your Lunar Lander and
successfully land on one of these pads. Success means landing directly on the
pad softly. If you are going too fast, you may damage or destroy your module,
which results in stiff fuel penalties. As you progress through the game, the
landing pads are put in difficult to reach places and it will test your skill
as a player to be able to land on them. Nothing like being a NASA astronaut.

 ____________________
/ 6.1  The Controls /__________________________________________________________
--------------------

The controls on this game are relatively easy. It may take some practice to be
able to maneuver your Lunar Lander at the spur of the moment.

- A lever that allows you to increase or decrease the thrust

- Two buttons to rotate your lander a maximum of 90 degrees left and 90
   degrees right

- An abort button when all else fails.

/ 6.2  The Playing Fields /____________________________________________________
--------------------------

The playing field for Lunar Lander is pretty simple in its layout. Being a
vector game, there is just the required detail to help you on your way. Here
is the playing field and also an example of the close up when you get close to
a landing pad:

Here is a quick explanation for your Lander's status:

+-------+
| SCORE |
+-------+

How many points you have earned.

+------+
| TIME |
+------+

The total time you have taken to complete the current landing.

+------+
| FUEL |
+------+

How much fuel you have left. You can buy more fuel with a quarter.

+----------+
| ALTITUDE |
+----------+

How far above the moons surface you are.

+------------------+
| HORIZONTAL SPEED |
+------------------+

How fast you are moving to the right or left. A number will be followed by an
arrow to indicate speed and your direction. For example, if you see:

35 ----->

Your speed is 35 and you are moving to the right.

+----------------+
| VERTICAL SPEED |
+----------------+

How fast you are moving up or down. A number will be followed by an arrow to
indicate speed and your direction. For example, if you see:

 66 |
    |
    V

Your speed is 66 and you are moving down.

You control the Lunar Lander.

 _______________
/ 6.3  Scoring /_______________________________________________________________
---------------

Scoring in this game is pretty simple:

You can score anywhere from 0 to 100 points depending on how well you landed
your Lunar Lander. In addition, these points are multiplied by the landing
pads multiplier value (i.e. 2X, 3X, etc.) to give you your total score for that
landing cycle.

You start with 450, 600, 750, or 900 fuel units depending on how many quarters
you put in the machine. Each extra quarter will give you another 150 fuel
units.

+======================+
| 7.  PLAYING THE GAME |=======================================================
+======================+

When you start the game, your Lunar Lander will be floating above the moon's
surface. Immediately, your lander will start to descend. Figure out where you
want to land and maneuver your lander to that landing pad.

- Fuel is a valuable commodity in this game. To get the most "bang" for your
   quarter, try to use as little as possible. Since everything burns fuel
   (even rotating your lander left and right), do your best to get centered
   over a landing pad so you don't have to overreact at the last minute.

- Use the thrust lever sparingly. It is easy to move it up and down so you
   can easily put on full thrusters before you realize what's happening. This
   can be especially dangerous if you are in a canyon and are going sideways.
   Your lander will become part of the moonscape very quickly. Just use short
   bursts to correct your downward and left/right movement. This not only
   gives you better control, but it also saves you on fuel.

- After you have decided on the landing pad, start maneuvering your lander
   toward it. Use minimal thrusters to keep your lander from going too fast
   toward the moon. Also, only tap on the right and left rotation buttons so
   that you keep your left/right speed as near to zero as possible.

- When you get near enough to the moon's surface, the view will change and you
   will get the close-up view. This is the time you can start doing all your
   finishing maneuvers. If you set yourself up right when you were way above
   the moon's surface, you shouldn't have to do much to ensure that you are
   over the landing pad. If you find yourself in trouble and there is no way
   out, press the ABORT button. The effects are that it automatically
   straightens out your lander, stops all left/right movement, and moves you a
   little ways off the surface. The penalty for this is approximately 100
   units of fuel.

- On your final descent onto the landing pad, watch your speed. If you land
   at anything greater then 10, you run the risk of damaging or destroying your
   lander. When you have landed, the game will give you an assessment of the
   landing and the points earned.

- Over time, the easy pads will go away and you will have to land on pads
   located on the sides of mountains or very deep, steep sided ravines. It
   will be even more critical that you know how to do small maneuvers since
   some of the landing pads are not wider then your lander.

| 8.  CONCLUSION |=============================================================
+================+

When Lunar Lander came out, it was more of a novelty then anything else.
Before I really knew how to play the game, I used to take my landers and crash
them into the cliffs just to watch them break apart (which is a pretty neat
effect). I finally, though, got somewhat serious and realized that the game
was a lot of fun to play. Because it actually requires a lot of practice and
skill, one could see results just by the fact that it took less quarters to
enjoy the game for a longer period of time. It never did, though, seem to
catch on and even when it came out, there weren't a lot of places that had this
game. Unfortunately, it is very rare to find this machine anywhere. However,
through the miracle of emulation, a whole new generation is realizing what we
"old" folks enjoyed those many years ago. In addition, www.shockwave.com is
bringing many of these classic games back. Check out their site to see what
ones are there. I hope this guide helps you in being able to get the most
amount of gameplay for this game. If you do have other ideas or thoughts,
please e-mail me and share them. Who knows, maybe I'll start a Q&A Chapter in
this guide if enough people ask the same questions. Anyway, thank you again
for reading this guide.
