    Welcome to my FAQ for Targ. Since the game has you continuously going
    through the rounds until all your men are killed, there is no walkthrough per
    se. Instead it will be broken up into the game itself and strategies for
    survival. Input is appreciated along with constructive criticism. If you wish
    to e-mail me thoughts on this FAQ, better ways of doing things, other
    strategies, etc., feel free. Make sure you put Targ as the subject. If you
    don't, I'm liable to discard the e-mail as spam.

    | 5.  OVERVIEW |===============================================================
    +==============+

    Targ was created by a company that had existed for quite a while. They, along
    with Atari and Midway, put out some of the first arcade games. Exidy also
    created the first controversy in regard to arcade games. They released a game
    called Death Race in 1976. The premise of that game was to run over as many
    people as possible to score points. Of course, the machine was banned in many
    places due to the violence of the game. Exidy is also well known for games
    such as Venture, Pepper II, Crossbow, and Cheyenne. Of course, not a company
    to leave well enough alone, they released Chiller in 1986 which met with the
    same bannings for extreme violence. Targ itself is a pretty tame game. You
    drive your Wummel through a 10 x 10 grid. You are armed only with a missile
    to defend yourself. Through this grid (or maze), you must avoid or kill the
    Targ Ramships and Spectar Smugglers. The action is fast-paced and after
    completing one level, you go right back through this grid again. It is a
    challenging game that can get the heart going. Good luck at protecting your
    Wummel from the enemies.

    | 6.  THE GAME |===============================================================
    +==============+

    Targ is a two-dimensional, maze style game. Your job is to either shoot or
    avoid the enemies running around in the maze. You will have to deal with the
    Targ Ramships, wedge shaped ships that pursue you constantly, or the Spectar
    Smugglers, which look like starships. As you progress through the levels, both
    of these enemies get smarter and are more adept at avoiding your fire. Some-
    times a good game of Pac-Man would be a better proposition.

    / 6.1  The Controls /__________________________________________________________
    --------------------

    The controls on this game are very easy. It may, though, take just a little
    bit of time to get used to them.

    - Four-way joystick for moving up, down, left, and right

    -  A fire button

    / 6.2  The Playing Field /_____________________________________________________
    -------------------------

    Targ consists of one field. It is on this playing field that you take care of
    all of your enemies. I have included an example of the playing field:

     _______________
    / 6.3  Scoring /_______________________________________________________________
    ---------------

    Scoring in this game is pretty easy although it is done a bit differently. You
    will be given the score value of a Targ Ramship at the beginning of each level.
    This is how you can figure out which level you are currently on.

    Targ Ramship: 10 points x level
    Spectar Smuggler:  100 - 900 points (by 100's)

    You also get a bonus for completing a level. The bonus is 1,000 points x level
    number.

    You start the game with 2 to 5 Wummels. You are awarded a bonus Wummel if you
    beat the current high score on the machine.

                                   ****************

    +======================+
    | 7.  PLAYING THE GAME |=======================================================
    +======================+

    When you start the game, your Wummel will be in the bottom right corner of the
    screen. There will be 10 Targ Ramships at the top of the 10 vertical lanes.

    - Learn how your Wummel operates. You can go pretty fast in one direction.
       To turn around, though, takes a little time since you have to slow down
       before you turn around. You can use this deceleration, though, to your ad-
       vantage to trap enemy units and sometimes get multiple kills.

    - You can only have one missile on the screen at any one time. Plan your
       shots accordingly. In addition, you can only fire forward.

    - All enemies on the screen will avoid trying to be in front of your Wummel.
       That means you must quickly get in front or behind them so they don't veer
       off to avoid your fire. This means you may have to plan a few ambushes to
       take out the enemies.

    - All the enemies (Targ Ramships and Spectral Smugglers) only move at full
       speed. This can work to your advantage since if they are coming at you,
       you can decelerate your Wummel and pick them off.

    - If you must turn around quickly, the easiest (and best) way to achieve this
       is to go around the blocks. Three right turns can turn you from the hunted
       into the hunter. In addition, this is great for setting up ambushes and
       taking out the enemy ships quickly.

    - Try to isolate enemy ships. If you try to take on a "pack" of them, you
       will lose since there are so many different directions that the enemy ships
       can come from.

    - During the first three levels, you have enough speed to avoid your
       attackers. This changes on level four and beyond as the enemy ships can
       easily outrun your Wummel. This means you will need to make very quick
       turns in order to get behind them.

    - Also, if you take too long on a level, the enemy ships will speed up to make
       quick work of your Wummel.

    - As you progress through the levels, the enemy ships will get "smarter" and
       attempt to corner your Wummel. Your safest action is to avoid being trapped
       while picking off individual enemy ships to even the odds.

    - Nifty little trivia note. The game screen is an optical illusion. If you
       stare at the yellow boxes, you will see yellow circles form at the
       intersections. Nothing that affects game play but still interesting.

    | 8.  CONCLUSION |=============================================================
    +================+

    Targ was one of those games that one would have never heard of except that a
    few units managed to make it to the places and establishments that couldn't
    afford to get the mainstream games such as Pac-Man or Galaxian. The first time
    I played Targ was a rather humbling experience. The action is fast paced and
    you not only have to concentrate on where you are, but also on where the enemy
    ships are at all times so you can plot the best way to take care of them.
    Although it isn't timed, you still wanted to finish a level as quickly as
    possible since the Spectral Smugglers soon would come out to give you even more
    grief. One of the hardest things to learn was how your Wummel operated. Many
    a time, I wanted to rapidly turn around and take out an enemy ship only to
    realize that I had to decelerate before I could turn. This game gave one an
    education very quickly. Unfortunately, it is very rare to find this machine
    anywhere. However, through the miracle of emulation, a whole new generation
    is realizing what we "old" folks enjoyed those many years ago. In addition,
    www.shockwave.com is bringing many of these classic games back. Check out
    their site to see what ones are there. I hope this guide helps you in being
    able to get the most amount of gameplay for this game. If you do have other
    ideas or thoughts, please e-mail me and share them. Who knows, maybe I'll
    start a Q&A Chapter in this guide if enough people ask the same questions.
    Anyway, thank you again for reading this guide.
