    Welcome to my FAQ for P-47: The Phantom Fighter. Since the game has you
    continuously playing through areas until all your men are killed, there is no
    walkthrough per se. Instead it will be broken up into the game itself and
    strategies for survival. Input is appreciated along with constructive
    criticism. If you wish to e-mail me thoughts on this FAQ, better ways of doing
    things, other strategies, etc., feel free. Make sure you put P-47 as the
    subject. If you don't, I'm liable to discard the e-mail as spam.

    | 5.  OVERVIEW |===============================================================
    +==============+

    Jaleco is a company that never achieved real fame with its video games. Before
    the videogame crash, it was shadowed by companies such as Bally/Midway, Atari,
    and Namco to name a few. Although they did produce a few videogames, very few
    of them actually managed to catch the public's imagination. Their first "hit"
    was City Connection. The player drove a car over platforms. Various city
    pictures provided the backdrop of these platforms to give the feeling of
    traveling around the world. Again, another dry spell occurred until 1988 when
    P-47: The Phantom Fighter was released. Given its fast action and the number
    of enemies a player had to contend with, P-47 was one of the better (if not
    best) release from Jaleco. Other games released during this year were Altered
    Beast, Ghouls and Ghosts, and LED Storm to name a few. Good luck and good
    hunting in your P-47.

    | 6.  THE GAME |===============================================================
    +==============+

    P-47 is a two-dimensional, scrolling shooter type of game. You play as the
    pilot of a P-47. Your mission is to basically destroy as many of the enemy as
    you possibly can. This means eliminating as many air and ground units as you
    can. You will be going through four missions (each being broken up into two
    parts) and at the end of each of these parts is an enemy boss for you to tangle
    with. Although you have unlimited ammunition, the enemy will make you pay for
    the invasion into their homeland. You will be able to accomplish this with
    various power-ups and also a second player (if they buy in). Your mission
    won't be easy but it is necessary so you can secure both the skies and ground
    for our troops.

    / 6.1  The Controls /__________________________________________________________
    --------------------

    The controls on this game are pretty easy. It may, though, take just a little
    bit of time to get used to them.

    -  An eight-way joystick

    -  A fire button

    -  An use item button

    / 6.2  The Playing Fields /____________________________________________________
    --------------------------

    P-47 consists of multiple playing fields. Although the playing fields look
    different, the screen setup is still the same. This is an example of what this
    field looks like (larger then regular size):

    / 6.3  Scoring /_______________________________________________________________
    ---------------

    Scoring in this game is complicated. There are a lot of enemy units for you to
    take out. In addition, some units have multiple parts which also score points.
    You also get points for collecting items and making it through a mission. The
    enemy units are broken up into air, ground, and boss.

    / 6.4  The Missions /__________________________________________________________
    --------------------

    The game is broken up into four missions. Within these four missions, there
    are two parts. One part involves going over land and the other part has you
    either going over water or being up in the air. Regardless of which part you
    are on, you will still have to deal with the same basic things. After part two
    of mission four, the missions will repeat again with mission one. Below are
    brief descriptions of the missions and the terrain you will have to deal with.
    Tips and strategies are in Chapter 7.

    +------------------------+
    | 6.4.1  Northern France |-----------------------------------------------------
    +------------------------+

    These missions will take you over the beautiful French countryside. The hills
    gently roll and the valleys aren't too deep.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.1.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    This part of the mission has you flying over the gentle green countryside.
    Don't let the terrain fool you, there are many enemies lurking both on the
    ground and in the air. There is enough room to maneuver so you shouldn't have
    too much trouble getting through.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.1.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    With a sunset (or sunrise) serving as the backdrop, you get to do battle in the
    skies over France. There aren't too many surprises for this part of the
    mission. You will, though, encounter a lot of air units.

    +---------------------+
    | 6.4.2  North Africa |--------------------------------------------------------
    +---------------------+

    These missions take you into the rough terrain of northern Africa. This is
    where the Atlas mountains make their way to the sea.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.2.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    You will be flying over some very rough terrain. The valleys are deep and the
    mountains only allow enough room for your plane to "scrape" by.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.2.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    This part of the mission has you flying over the open sea. You will encounter
    all air units until the end of this part.

    +-----------------+
    | 6.4.3  Ardennes |------------------------------------------------------------
    +-----------------+

    Looks like you are back in Europe again. You job is to keep the Germans
    subdued long enough for your infantry to take care of them.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.3.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    This time, you will be fighting a battle above the clouds. The weather is gray
    and dreary...a perfect day for destroying enemy air targets.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.3.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    For some reason, you are in a desert environment here. Anyway, you have the
    pyramids and Sphinx as backdrops for your rampage against those enemies that
    are in the air and on the ground.

    +-----------------+
    | 6.4.4  Ardennes |------------------------------------------------------------
    +-----------------+

    Winter over Europe is supposed to be peaceful and tranquil. This time, though,
    it isn't even close.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.4.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    You get to fly over a snowy landscape that is completely populated by enemy air
    and ground units. The terrain is also a mix of rolling hills contrasted with
    sharp peaks and valleys.

    /===================\
    | 6.4.4.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    You get to do a little night flying over the ocean. This area has you being
    hounded by air and sea units.

     __________________
    / 6.5  The Bosses /____________________________________________________________
    ------------------

    After each part of a mission, you will encounter a boss. These bosses range
    from large planes to battleships. You must defeat the boss in order to advance
    to the next part and/or mission.

    +------------------------+
    | 6.5.1  Northern France |-----------------------------------------------------
    +------------------------+

    You will be tangling with a rail gun on the first part and a large bomber on
    the second part.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.1.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    - Before you get to the rail gun, make sure you have the Bomb power-up. This
       will make things a lot easier.

    - A train will be moving under your plane. On board are anti-aircraft turrets
       and smaller rail guns. You can bomb these guns to lessen the fire but be
       sure to avoid the tracers.

    - Eventually a large rail gun will pass beneath your plane. Then it will be
       followed by two smaller rail guns. Try to pick off the two smaller rail
       guns first to lessen the amount of fire you will have to deal with.

    - After you take out the two smaller rail guns, take out the big one.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.1.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    - A large bomber will appear from the left side of the screen. Make sure you
       have either the Missiles or T power-up equipped.

    - The bomber will fire bursts of three rounds from the tail end. In addition,
       it will also fire a massive double burst of two five round arcs.

    - The basic idea of this boss is to basically unload all the firepower you
       have into it while avoiding the counter-fire. Your best bet is to basically
       move up and down behind the enemy bomber while you chip away at it.

    +---------------------+
    | 6.5.2  North Africa |--------------------------------------------------------
    +---------------------+

    You will be tangling with a tank on the first part and a battleship on the
    second part.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.2.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    - Ensure you have the Bomb power-up equipped for this boss. You will be
       dropping a lot upon this very large tank.

    - This boss, as compared to the others thus far, isn't too bad. The big thing
       you will need to avoid is the massive amount of fire power coming from the
       turret.

    - The anti-aircraft from the turret will either be a five-shot arc or a five-
       shot double-arc. Either way, it will be a heavy volume of firepower.

    - Try to swoop in, drop your bomb load, and swoop out again. Keep this up to
       eliminate the tank.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.2.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    - Make sure you have the Bomb power-up for this boss. You will be unloading a
       lot upon the battleship.

    - Your plane will catch up to the battleship. Try to bomb as much as you can
       as the ship slides underneath your plane. Just watch out for the heavy
       volume of anti-aircraft fire.

    - If you can eliminate as many of the guns as possible on this pass, life will
       be easier for you on the second pass.

    - Once you get to the bow of the ship, it will reverse course and slide back
       to the right. Eliminate anything you didn't get on the first pass. If you
       did your job well, you should have few targets to deal with.

    - Once the ship stops, bomb the heck out of the bridge area and you will be
       rewarded with a large explosion and a sinking ship.

    +-----------------+
    | 6.5.3  Ardennes |------------------------------------------------------------
    +-----------------+

    You will be tangling with a bomber on part one and a tank on part two.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.3.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    The difference in strategy between this bomber and the one from Chapter 6.5.1.2
    is that you will have to eliminate the two escorts.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.3.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    Use the same strategy as you used in Chapter 6.5.2.1.

    +-----------------+
    | 6.5.4  Ardennes |------------------------------------------------------------
    +-----------------+

    You get to tangle with a tank on part one and a battleship on part two.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.4.1  Part One |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    Use the same strategy as you used in Chapter 6.5.2.1.

    /===================\
    | 6.5.4.2  Part Two |----------------------------------------------------------
    \===================/

    Use the same strategy as you used in Chapter 6.5.2.2

    / 6.6  The Items /_____________________________________________________________
    -----------------

    The smaller helicopters drop power-up items. These items give your helicopter
    additional abilities beyond just using your gun. The items are:

      M: This allows your plane to use missiles. Each time you collect one of
          these, the maximum amount of missiles that can be fired at once increases
          by one up to a maximum of four for each M or B collected.

      B: This allows your plane to use bombs. Each time you collect one of these,
          the maximum amount of bombs that can be fired at once increases by one up
          to a maximum of four for each B or M collected.

      E: Explosive bombs that throw out eight smaller pieces of shrapnel. Good
          against both air and land targets.

      T: Allows your plane to fire energy beams in the direction that you are
          flying.

      S: Enhances the power of missiles by allowing them to split into two parts
          for a maximum of eight missiles.

    1UP: Gives you an extra fighter.

    Below are listed the order of the items you can collect through the four
    missions and their sub-parts.

    Northern France:  Part One:  M, B, M, S, B, E, T, S, 1UP, B
                      Part Two:  M, S, T, M, T, E, S, 1UP, T, E

    North Africa   :  Part One:  S, B, E, B, T, S, B, B, E
                      Part Two:  M, S, B, B, B, S, B, B, B, B

    Ardennes       :  Part One:  S, T, M, T, E, T, S, M, T
                      Part Two:  M, M, B, M, S, E, M, 1UP, S, B

    Ardennes       :  Part One:  B, E, B, M, T, B, M, B, M, B
                      Part Two:  B, S, B, B, B

    +======================+
    | 7.  PLAYING THE GAME |=======================================================
    +======================+

    As soon as you start the game, you will immediately be placed into the thick of
    the action. Be ready for anything.

    - This game is very fast-paced and it only gets harder as you progress through
       the missions. This means you will have to be constantly aware of what is
       happening from both in the air and on the ground.

    - Your fighter has unlimited firepower in both bullets and also auxiliary
       weapons such as bombs and missiles. Use this to your advantage by laying
       down a solid wall of firepower to prevent any enemy units from getting close
       to your fighter.

    - Make sure, though, that you are constantly aware of where an enemy unit is
       because you will also have to gauge where its fire will be heading. In
       addition, most enemy units move so they basically will "shoot and scoot"
       making it harder for you to pinpoint their location.

    - To take care of units that like to roam around, lay down a "carpet" of bombs
       or other heavy firepower. Your bombs drop down much faster then an enemy
       unit can move so you can basically overwhelm them with superior firepower.

    - Some enemies require more then one hit to take them out. This means you
       will have to use a combination of different offensive weapons to destroy
       them. This will be especially true when you are fighting the bosses.

    - Make sure you know the lay of the land at all times. Some topography has
       some extremes in both hills and valleys. Sometimes your only choice is to
       go above a mountain peak that has a lot of ground and air units guarding it.
       This means you will have to unleash some serious firepower to make it safely
       over.

    - Ensure that you know how to regulate your speed depending on the current
       conditions. You can go no faster then the right side of the screen nor any
       slower then the left. Use this speed-up, slow-down to avoid enemy fire and
       to eliminate targets before they become unmanageable.

    - Make sure you eliminate all helicopters that have items so you can ensure
       you have the right kind of power-up plus you can also get free men.

    - When you encounter large formations of planes, the best weapons are the
       missiles or exploding bombs. These can clear out large holes in those
       formations plus they can prove rather deadly to the bigger planes as well.

    - Overall, this game involves the application of massive amounts of firepower
       in order to survive the next mission. This isn't to say, however, that
       paying attention and constantly moving aren't also important...they are
       vital to your survival.

    | 9.  CONCLUSION |=============================================================
    +================+

    P-47 was one of those "sleeper" games that happened to get put into the back of
    one of the arcades I went to. After putting in a couple of quarters, I found
    myself hooked to this game. Not only could you put down a heavy volume of fire
    to eliminate enemy units, the graphics of said units were rather impressive.
    You could make out the details of all the different units which added another
    level of realism to the game. The main thing, though, was being able to
    collect the power-ups and gain even more abilities for your plane. This game
    became a rather guilty pleasure for blowing off steam. Unfortunately, it is
    very rare to find this machine anywhere. However, through the miracle of
    emulation, a whole new generation is realizing what we "old" folks enjoyed
    those many years ago. In addition, www.shockwave.com is bringing many of
    these classic games back. Check out their site to see what ones are there.
    I hope this guide helps you in being able to get the most amount of gameplay
    for this game. If you do have other ideas or thoughts, please e-mail me and
    share them. Who knows, maybe I'll start a Q&A Chapter in this guide if enough
    people ask the same questions. Anyway, thank you again for reading this guide.
