Spy Hunter
Review by Onion Kid
"I Love it! *Plays theme to Peter Gunn*"
Well, I've only ever played the Atari 800 version but eh, it's the same game! I've loved this ever since the Tech TV show ''The Screensavers'' spoke of an Atari 800 emulator that was not only legal but had great ROMs like this. So out of all the ROMs I got for it, I loved Spy Hunter and you will see why in the following paragraphs...
Gameplay 10/10
This is the best part of the game. Controls are real simple: Press the button to shoot your gun and fire missiles, up for accelerate, down for brake, left to go left, and right to go right. These amazingly simple controls along with the endless number of spies and innocent civilians to destroy (you're not supposed to kill civilians but it's fun! Don't tell anyone ;)) and different terrains make the gameplay extraordinary.
Also the point system is easy to figure out. The further you go, the more points you get. At multiples of 10000, you get 1 new car. Helicopters once destroyed give 4000 points. Weapons Trucks carry weapons. Simply go directly behind a truck and you get weapons (although the only useful one is the missiles truck...)
Story 0/10
Eh this is where it's not so great ^_^;; The only objective is kill spies. There are infinite spies so the game never ends. There is no reward for beating x amount of spies so really there can be no real ''story''...
Music 10/10
Peter Gunn's theme works amazingly well for this game's background music. It's repetitive but is really good as long as you don't play for hours on end in which case you will go insane humming it O_o
Graphics 9/10
For Atari, the graphics are great. Vivid enough for you to be able to actually tell what the hell is going on unlike other Atari games *coughpacmancough*.
Replayability and Playability 9/10
As long as you can get used to it, you'll never put it down. The game plays well and only crashes in extreme cases. You will find, I'm sure, Spy Hunter could be played for hours on end over and over again.
Overall7.6/10
So what are you waiting for!? Go out and buy Spy Hunter! Oh wait you may not be able to find a copy...ah well there are always ROMs or your old videogame-obsessed friend who owns all games ever made in mint condition and he's mastered them all...
Overall this game is more worth the time than any other Atari games of its time. Definitely a wondrous gift to the videogames of today and yesterday. Well done Midway.
