Crash after loading screen

I've tried this on 2 installs of XP now, no matter what I do if I get past the crash on startup then I crash on loading a new game. I've tried installing using the installer and copying the SHOCK folder off the CD. I use SS2 Tool and check the Patching up and Getting mod-ready boxes, then I've tried many combinations of the Bug Fixes section and all result in the same error. I even tried patching the game with SS2 Tool and then again with the standalone DDFix. The movies play fine, I can go to Options and to start a new game, but after the initial video plays the loading screen comes up, the bar fills, and then I get a hollow window showing my desktop behind it before my screen goes black and a "Shock.exe has encountered an error" dialog box comes up.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled many times now, and will again trying it with just the "Patching Up" section checked, but I've got no hope as of now. Does anybody know how to fix this? I ran across someone with the same error, but they had it because of not choosing a full install, and that's not my problem for sure.

Have you checked the troubleshhoting list on this link:

http://www.systemshock.org/index.php/topic,106.0.html

Specifically: If the game crashes at the start, try renaming the file LGVID.AX to LGVID.AX.BAK

Actually I have, but just for kicks I tried the fix you posted.

No dice, I've tried just about everything I can find everywhere and I'm starting to think the only way I'm gonna get this to run is to bust out my win98 machine

I don't know what the deal is, it seems like you've covered all your bases. I haven't had any real trouble running this on XP or 7 with SS2tool. Perhaps your copy of SS2 is simply messed up?

Well I did get it from a less than reputable source, but it doesn't come prepatched or modded and it's worked before ( I've had the cd for over a year now). I might try on my desktop, but I really dont know why I'm having so much trouble.

Found the solution in the ss2tool thread if anyone comes looking for a fix to the same problem. I had to change the usesysmemoverlay option in ddfix.ini to 2 and then change max number of frames to render ahead in nvidia control panel to 0. It works fine now :)
