Clock Tower Gears

This is driving me bonkers. Do all four (both regular and inverted castle gears) have to switched properly to open up the gate?

Any and all details about this would be appreciated.

From Zkeene's FAQ:

Q) There's this gate in the Clock Tower. How do I open it?
A) Scattered in two rooms of the Clock Tower are four gears. To open the
gate, go to a gear and keep hitting it until it makes a "click" sound,
instead of the clanking sound it usually makes. Then move on to another
gear. Once all four gears are "clicked" into place, the gate will open.

For the PSX version, you can use these crude maps to see how many hits
each gear needs (G represents the gate):

First Castle:.................Second Castle:
|....2|14..|.......................... |......|....G|
|8....|....3|...........................|3....|....8|
|G...|.......|...........................|..14|2....|

If you accidentally pass the click, it will cycle back to it every 16 strikes.

Thank you for the fast reply, I was looking for the information in the wrong FAQ.

So I do have to get all four. Got the two in the Inverted Castle tripped. Time to get to the other ones.

Yeah, I didn't understand that at all the first time I looked at it. More wasted time.

No, there are four gears in each castle, for a total of eight. That's why the map has a set of four numbers for each castle. To open the gate in one castle, you need to activate the four gears in that castle. The gears in one castle have no effect on the other castle.

Oh, I figured it out after I screwed it up and really bothered to look at the schematics.

Now you know why I asked in the first place.

I'm not so sure those FAQ numbers are right. I mean, if you accidentally click one too many times, it not only resets the gear, but I believe it changes the number of times you need to hit all four gears. In other words, screws it all up. I can't confirm it though, and it doesn't matter anyway because all you have to do is just keep hitting those gears until you hear the clicking sound.

Well, that's what I did... just wait for the clicking sound.

Here is my malfunction: I thought there were four total gears. I was running back and forth between the two castles trying to sync the four that are in the rooms with the gate. I didn't even get that there were four per castle until I looked at the schematic. Derpa derp.
