Unlocking TT without controller pak?

Is it possible to do this? I hear that you need a pak to save ghosts and such. I did a few races, beat TT, turned off the game and when I turned it back on I found that it had saved my best time. So is the pak needed for certain things or is it required for TT?

Yeah, your best times save to the cartridge and you don't need a controller pak to unlock TT.
Just race a track on time trial, TT will challenge you after you've done it once. I think a picture of TT appears on the vehicle select screen or something (Tracks mode) when you've beaten him on that track, so you won't forget which you have and haven't done.

That's awesome, thanks. Now I don't have to go through the trouble of ordering a pak from ebay or wherever...looking forward to unlocking TT; wish me luck.

Well I just beat Wizpig 1 today for the first time and I've beat all TT times in the first four worlds without hardly any difficulty using Tiptup. It was quite enjoyable actually; having used the rapid A button and R-B-A drift really helped me out throughout the tracks.. The only levels that gave me trouble were the damn hovercraft ones, Boulder Canyon to specific, since hard turns seems to make the hovercraft lose all of its momentum.

Now I just need to beat the 4 in that space world.

Oh that's cool then. I dont think I've ever tried those techniques, I dont think I even had the internet at home when I used to play it alot haha.
I seem to remember the space levels not being too hard.. TT's ghost was a bit rubbish sometimes- I think Spaceport Alpha was the hardest.. but then I wasn't very good in a plane.

Finally unlocked TT, the space levels weren't too difficult although, I too did not like Spaceport Alpha. The other tracks were a blast and unlocking TT was close to a cinch. It's a shame that you get him so close to the end of the game. I then beat Wizpig 2 which was quite tricky at first since I did not know the track, took me about 15 restarts. TT's handling proved essential to getting through though.

Best racer on the N64. Mario Kart 64 pales in comparison to this game.

Congrats on unlocking TT! The only thing you really need for the controller pak is for saving ghosts. It's sadly only like...5 ghosts per card, too.

Here's your next challenge. Beat TT without using TT or doing the A button mashing trick.
