Man, the localization team for this was made up of complete idiots, eh?

r and l in japanese are phonetically equivalent because you do not roll your tongue when pronouncing that particular character so it sounds like a hybrid of the two and is usually a grey area for translators.

for example alma in the japanese is aruma but it does sound like alma.

and well bonusnacchu is pretty accurate, especially with the small tsu (cc) which makes sounds more distinct.

Lol, and the enemy named "bonesnatch" hahaha. Lets go, bonesnatch!

Though the mistakes are glaring, I think the translation errors are justified. I have been studying Japanese for the last year or so (with Genki, which I recommend to anyone who wishes to do so as well) and some of the names/spells which are messed up are translated justifiably. Even the hideous 'Deathspell 2' on Alma, it has its reasons due to the phonetic ambiguity with the Katakana.

So, for what it is worth, they aren't idiots, just maybe a bit too literal.

Nah, translating katakana the wrong way isn't justified (if you're a translator) just because the romaji allows for it. Translating "Deathspell 2" means translating without taking context (e.g. what the spell does) into account. It's the same reason why Babelfish translations aren't "good enough": because the translator needs to take context into account.

When I translate katakana, I look up a lot of information. Even without the Internet of the modern era, I would check the related image (in this case, animation), the other things of that type, and what the effect is.

So they aren't idiots or literal, they just didn't put enough work into it. No cross-checking and such. Lack of QA. I don't know if it's their fault or if it was a rushed job on the part of Square, but sometimes the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing (Brave Up versus Face Up).

To the translators' defense, there are cases where translators aren't allowed to see images of (let alone play) the game, so they occasionally have to guess. If different people are working on the same translation, it can explain the same thing being translated differently in different parts of the game (Rich/Lich, Moogle/Mogri, etc), if the translators didn't (or couldn't) consult each other.

I'm a translator, so I know a little bit about how this stuff works. A little bit.

True, which is why I didn't put the blame on the translators rather than their bosses.

I like it much better than WOTL's translation.

Yeah, "idiots" is a little harsh. But y'all know what I mean. Spelling errors abound!

Just about every old square game I've played has cheesy dialogue and less than stellar translations.

Woolsey at least had some good cheesy dialogues.

"Son of a submariner!"

EDIT: If you want to see truly atrocious translations, look no further than Breath of Fire 2 on the SNES. It's hard to see many games with that butchering of the English language.

lol breath of fire 2 is pretty horrible. but, i also own the gba version and at the end of the day the script itself is the problem. its otherwise a very simple story, and thus very simple script.

Izlude is an awesome name though.

...until they changed it to "Isliud" in the new version. <_<
I hate when new versions of classics screw up perfectly fine name spellings for no reason other than "omgs it must be Isliud becuz that's what the Japanese name would become more liek in English!".

what i hated most was "l-i-t-t-l-e m-o-n-e-y" and you can't blame that on the translators
