FF7 Japanese Beta Demo - Video with annotations

As you may know, Squaresoft released an FFVII demo with their flagship 3D fighter, Tobal No. 1. I heard about it a few years ago, but could never get access to a disc. But I've recently gained access to the Japanese version and have uploaded a video to youtube.

In it, I've annotated several differences between the beta and the final product - both big and small. Overall, I actually like the beta - or at least the demo - better. Enemies are much tougher and character stats are better balanced. In fact, it plays surprisingly like the start of my own Rebirth mod.

There's a few rough edges, though. The music isn't quite the same (I've recorded a direct audio stream), and some of the animations need a little work. A lot of battle backgrounds seem rather oddly lit and coloured, but maybe that's just because I'm so used to the final version.

Interesting. The question must be asked... how did Biggs end up there? >_>

A couple of things I noticed... the door at 6:55 isn't there which means that Jesse actually walks through an open doorway instead of through a door for once. Also HP changes aren't reflected from damage/healing until after the attack animation is complete instead of when the damage numbers show up.

What is it with Square and the Leviathan Summon?

You have it in the VII Demo and the VIII Demo IIRC.

Very nice of you to upload this, complete with annotations. Although I've already played through this version of the demo many times, it deserves to be up on YouTube.

About the demo from 1996, there are two releases for it. One via Tobal, another one via presumably-a-magazine-but-I-honestly-have-not-bothered-yet-to-confirm this, that contains the Siggraph 95 presentation.

Interesting. I was aware that Square did early 3D CG renders of the FFVI cast as part of a technical showcase, but I never realized they'd actually done a whole demo battle in CG. I notice that the Bahamut concept is surprisingly similar to the FFVII animation.
