New Perfect Game Journal ^.^

#1Ultima_MGPosted 2/11/2012 7:45:31 PM
Hey all, been on the boards here for a while but I rarely comment on anything. I do, however, enjoy reading a lot of the stuff that goes up on the boards (especially perfect game related topics).

My girlfriend and I recently threw in FF7 after a long overdue break from it and decided to go for a legit perfect game. I'm tracking all progress in a journal-of-sorts and transposed Absolute Steve's tables into an excel spreadsheet for tracking purposes. If it matters, I'm playing the original PSX disks on my PS3. (Might swap to my PS1 to Morph/W-Item a couple enemies)

I'd say the only difference between the rules laid out in Steve's FAQ and what I'm going for will be 9999 Escapes instead of 0, and will be maxing all items possible including Extended W-Item ones. I've decided to max natural HP/MP on disk 1 so that I can include Aeris as well.

I've been paying close attention to the amazing progress songsengnim has made and am doing my best to emulate it. Big thanks to the following for the tips, tricks, strategies, and the obscene amount of knowledge I've picked up on the boards here regarding this challenge:

WingedMasamune
Absolute Steve
Jukain
songsengnim
op1282
Terence
Erzfreund
The_Kusabi

Anyway, I guess if I had any questions to aid in my progress so far I should start here: Which two characters is it ideal to leave dead in party for the majority or all of Cloud's leveling process? Right now I've got Red XIII and Vincent in party (dead of course).

I started the game on wednesday and just hit mideel islands tonight to start the maxing process. My party looks like this:

Cloud - 38
Barrett - 26
Tifa - 27
Aeris - 27
Red XIII - 32
Yuffie - 31
Cait Sith - 28
Vincent - 30
Cid - 31

Current Party: Cloud, Vincent (Dead), Red XIII (Dead).

Just be careful that those party members in the PHS are still going to receive 50% EXP.

The advantage of the Mideel Islands on Disc 1 are that you can very easily know just exactly what you'll be getting after each battle. Nothing you fight will ever exceed 2600 EXP making it a lot easier to know when to save before leveling up.

I also recommend (if you have more than one alive character) Cover, but mostly the Counter Attack Materia. (Rune Blade is excellent for this) Once you have a few of 'em it becomes very easy to just auto-battle your way while leveling and give you a break on the monotonousness of it all. Just be sure to take them off when leveling if you decide to go that route.

If you wanted the list of enemies and their EXP if you didn't already write it down this might help.

Grasslands
- 800 : Hippogriff
- 1400 : Spiral x2
- 1950 : Head Hunter x3
- 2600 : Head Hunter x4

Dirt
- 800 : Hippogriff
- 1400 : Spiral x2
- 2100 : Sprial x3

Beach
- 1300 : Sea Worm

Other than that, best of luck.

I appreciate the input ^.^ I hadn't considered the worms' xp value, that could really help in a pinch. Since it's midnight, here's the status update for today.

End of Day Status Update
Cloud - 50
Barrett - 40
Tifa - 41
Aeris - 41
Red XIII - 32
Yuffie - 42
Cait Sith - 41
Vincent - 30
Cid - 42

I'll still be at it till the wee hours of the morning I suppose :-)

I found it helpful from time to time when I was going for Aeris's charts.

I found the Hippogriff's L2 Confu attack a pain to deal with on even levels and they can be found on both the usual Grassland and Dirt areas. So it's not bad knowing you'll get at least 1300 every time on the beach. Though the encounter rate seems to be a bit slower.

Gotta love them x3 and x4 Head Hunter encounters.

Yeah, that's what I've been exploiting at these lower levels. I've been running from anything except headhunters. It's faster xp gain and it pushes me closer to 9999 escapes >.< which is turning into a huge pain lol. I think I'm at like 600 escapes :-/

I absolutely adore Beta and Finishing Touch on groups of headhunters :-)
I found level 42 is the magic number for being able to 1-shot a group of headhunters with Beta (something that's probably common knowledge at this point, but I found it amusing ^.^)

I was fond of Trine until I got Remove, then once Tifa hit around 45-50+ she was killing them in one hit. 4-5 Counter Attacks and Cover and you never have to lift a finger to win the battle as it's over in about 25 seconds.

I definitely wish you good luck. I put my perfect game file on hold, but my sanity was definitely tested trying to win 99 Earth Mallets (I chose not to use W-item on my perfect game playthrough). I was able to get all the way up through the end of the crater with everyone still within their safety levels. For the majority of the time, I had Cid and Vincent dead.

Now that Cid's tables have been fixed, I think you can level up whoever you want. I don't think there's a reason to keep anyone dead anymore, except just when preventing two people from leveling at the same time.

Cid's tables may be fixed but they're still being a royal pain >.< I hit a 50+ reset streak at level 52 and I'm seeing the same problem at 54 . . . outside of that, all the other characters are behaving quite nicely.

We'll see you again when you hit the 100+ mark on one level. Or in songsengnim's case 200+
