I've always been just a little disappointed that there aren't 5 master materia. It wouldn't have been so hard to do.
Master Independent: +10% all stats, allow long range, chocobo lure, no effect on encounter rate, cover 25%
Master Support: immunity to+added effect/elemental of attached materia, enable "all" effect with no limit, 25% counter rate with attached materia, final attack effect (limit 2) w/ attached.
I just started a new file and got to thinking about this, I know there's more of both materia types, but can't think of them at the moment. Feel free to list them, or I'll incorporate them as I remember/discover them.
It's just a bummer. It would be entirely possible to balance the two, and would add another level of depth to the already wonderful materia system.

I have to agree with you there. Coming back to this game 10 years later, I really wish that there was some way outside of limitation challenges to make the game more difficult. This is why I wish they'd remake it. I know they complain that it would simply be too much work with the new consoles' capabilities, but honestly I'd settle for a remake that was graphically on par with the PSX version and instead had increased difficulty or additional content. It's sad that the hardest part of this game is some of the Gold Saucer mini games.
