New NPC names in the NA version?

I was wondering: are the commentators' names from FFX (Zanar, Bobba, Jimma) canon or did they just get the names in the english/american translation?

Many people should know that the NA translation is not 100% match the original Jap, but my German PAL version does (the translations are based on the Jap version, not the NA). And in my game these persons don't have any names. In fact, I thought it was Auron talking in the beginning of the game when I first played it.

What do you know or think about it?

What do I think? The names are in print, therefore published; done is done. Frankly, though, Square Enix will revise anything they choose, at any time they like, using whatever excuse as they please.

A canon is either a religious document carved in stone and above all revising, or simply a tool to prevent embarrassing gaffs by later writers. And in the latter case, the writer will usually latch onto any excuse to weasel in their weak-*** story idea. They don't need us handing them any more bad ideas. :j

BTW, "Jap" is still considered derogatory to our Japanese friends. Thanks for spelling out Japan instead, or using the country code, JP.

It was used to reference the culture of a people. o.O;

In regards to Bobba and Jimma and company: Names don't have an 'Official' translation anyway, surely? Unless they were specifically chosen to mean something and not just to point out an existing character, I suppose.

"Jap" is pretty obviously an abbreviation. If "Japanese person" wouldn't be offensive in the same context, don't complain. (Even more so when it's being used to refer to the language, not the people.)

so grow some skin if you want to last on the internet.

Survived the Source getting merged into CIS. The web back then was all doctoral theses and Usenet backups. Don't assume.

"Jap" is pretty obviously an abbreviation.

Okay, here's the education then: The term is an insult, akin to the n-word. Cue up a copy of 1941 if you don't have a memory of it in that usage. It's a purposely dehumanizing term.

The postal code, JP, is shorter, for Pete's sake. Calling it an abbreviation is a rationalization, at best.

As much Japanese culture is infused into FFX and seeps into other Square titles, this thoughtlessness from supposed fans still surprises me, I'm afraid.

Sorry, but I choose to speak up, and did so in a respectful manner. Banzai.

By that definition saying "Brit" should be an insult.

And last time I checked we don't live in 1941, what where insults back then aren't any more

It is derogatory in which country? As I already told, I am from Germany. I can't consider every cultural taboo existing on the planet. Was it like saying "Voldemort" in the Harry Potter universe? It was just an abbreviation. Period.
