I don't really see how it's BS, you can use fliers too. Also, any creature with the Web ability can block fliers (Giant Spider being the most obvious example). Or you can use some of the eleventy billion anti-aggro cards to deal with them.

It's an effect, just like any. And just like any monster having an effect, it comes at a cost to make it fair. Like Suntail Hawk being "just a 1/1" for 1 mana, Snapping Drake being "just a 3/2" for 4 mana (which would be terribad for a non-flier), etcetera.

FYI another ability some creatures have is called "Reach" which also blocks flyers.

Flying monsters are mainly offensive. They completely suck for blocking, so if you can't beat the fliers, then kill the opponent and force them to be defensive.
Getting hurt don't matter as long as you don't die. That 1/1 flier takes 20 turns to kill you. You can kill him in 9 turns using a 3/3.

Mahamoti Djinn, Air Elemental, Sengir Vampire, Goldenglow Moth and several other high toughness fliers would like to have a word with you.
