Welcome to the third topic of the second Super Mario 64 Video Quiz! This is a continuation of the first Quiz by mr_roberts_z. I would highly recommend reading these rules, no matter if you are new or not, as I have modified the due-date and various other rules this time around.

About the Quiz

So what is this?
This is the second Super Mario 64 Video Quiz. It is made up of a series of tasks, usually 10 for each level, that are designed to test the skills of competitors. These tasks are separated into two groups; Timed and Non-Timed. Timed tasks are more based on route planning and speed (more about the scoring of these later in the FAQ), whereas Non-Timed tasks are more about skill and thought. In timed tasks, the person with the fastest route gets the most points. In a non-timed task, everyone who completed the task correctly gets the points. When you do any given task, you are able to get points. The person with the most points, by the end of the final level, wins.

Who are you?
I'm both Quate32 and QuateLPs on youtube, and I used to participate in the first Quiz. After the finals, I ended up in fifth, even though I started rather late in the Quiz. The reason mr_roberts_z isn't running this Quiz is because he really doesn't have that much free time to do it anymore. I'm running it because I know quite a bit about this game. If you need to contact me, please send Quate32 a PM on youtube or simply post in the topic.

How much time do I have to complete a task?
There is a deadline of five days to complete a task. This can be changed if a competitor or two needs it to be extended by a a day or two, of course; if you need more time, simply ask. Try not to do this too much, though; the reason the task deadline was changed from eight days to five is because at the rate it was going, the Quiz would finish in the middle of 2016.

The task deadline is "January 1st." How come other people still submit on that day?
The deadlines are actually the final days that you may upload and post your entries. For the sake of consistency, you MUST post videos on and before 11:59 PST on January 1st. This means that any entries submitted beyond this point will not be counted, with the exception of extensions and language troubles. I will usually post the new task and results the following day, but don't kill me if I wait a day or two.

How many tasks will there be?
There is expected to be either 1, 4, 10, 15, or 20 tasks for any level. For instance, a mini-level like the Tower of the Wing Cap may only have 1 or 2 tasks while a huge level like Wet-Dry World could have 20 tasks. It all depends on how many task ideas I have per level. As introduced in the last topic, there is a new "revisiting" thing that will happen much later in the quiz. After every level has its 5, 10, or 15 initial tasks, we will revisit them with an extra set of 3 or 5. In the case of Bowser levels, there will be three beforehand and four afterwards.

So how ARE Timed tasks scored?
Timed tasks are scored in a much different way than the first Quiz. In the first Quiz, the winner got the maximum amount of points, the person in second place got half of those points, and the person in third got about one fourth. After that, nobody else got points. In THIS Quiz, the person in first place gets the full amount of points plus 10 more. Any other competitor within 5 seconds gets the full amount of points, but no bonus. Any person below this gets about half of the full points. Thank Jish for this new timing system; he gets all the credit.

Why is the first task of a level always so easy and the later ones so hard?
This is just to be friendly to everyone. Although it's encouraged that you try every task, if you're terrible at the game then you don't really have to do the harder ones.

Competing in the Quiz

Do you mind if I use a camera to record my entry?
Go ahead! You may use a camera if that's all you have. Try not to use a terrible quality webcam, though; sometimes that can impact timing and I may time your entry incorrectly. On my old Video Quiz tasks, I used a camera, and got better than average quality. If you try to fill the entire video with the TV picture, it will look a lot more professional.

Can I use the Virtual Console version of Mario 64?
Absolutely! There's no difference between the VC and original version, so you can do this.

I can also record with a GameBridge or a Dazzle, right?
Yes. If you have some sort of recording software, then please use it. It's much more professional looking and makes it very easy to time. If you don't mind, I would also like for you to tell me if you are using a console when submitting your first task. Although it's usually easy to tell, sometimes it is not and I'll need clarification.

I live in Europe and I play on the console with the PAL version of the game. Can I join?
Absolutely! You've probably noticed that the PAL version runs slower than the NTSC (American and Japanese) version. This is fine, however; for timed tasks, multiplying the time by (5/6) will match the speed exactly. Some people have suggested giving penalties to people who use PAL for it makes the game easier. I have thought about it, but will not act upon it yet.

I'm allowed to use emulators, correct?
Once again, yes. However, you must use Project64 or 1964 to record your entries; other emulators have functions like slowdown that are considered cheating. When recording your entries, you should use a screen recorder that can record the filebar of Project64 and 1964, like CamStudio or Camtasia. If you have to use Fraps, however, you may. There is one restriction, though; if you use Fraps, you MUST use the Timer Gameshark Code to show that you are not cheating. I repeat, you MUST use the Timer Code. If you don't, I won't accept any entry after the one in which I told you to use it.

I have Camtasia, but I prefer Fraps. Can I use Fraps?
Although again, there's no way to prove this, no. If you have Camtasia, I'd prefer you to use that and record the filebar than for you to use the timer code and Fraps.

You have asked me to prove that my video isn't fake. Not only am I offended, how do I do that?
First of all, if I ask you to do this, don't feel offended. Feel honored that you are good enough to make somebody else think you used tools. The answer to how is sometimes to upload the raw video, with filebar and all, or sometimes it is unprovable. If it is unprovable, then I will count your entry but will ask you to either record the screen with a camera or to use CamStudio or Camtasia next task.

What is the timer code?
It's a code created by Yoshielectron that makes a timer show up in the game. The reason it shows you are not cheating is it is not easy to make it show up in an emulator that you can cheat with. Unfortunately the code is too long to include in this topic, so you must use Google to find it. Sorry.

Can I use another gameshark code?
Unless it is a “Mario Color Code,” or the "120 stars/100 lives" code, you may not use any other Gameshark code. Using any codes that are not the timer code or a color code are banned, and you may be completely disqualified if you use them.

How do you time tasks?
I begin timing the first frame that Mario hits the ground (the frame his back arches slightly on the ground) and ends whenever the task is completed. Although in most task descriptions I say "timing starts when Mario enters the level," I really mean when his back arches.

Competing in the Quiz Continued

Why don't YOU submit any tasks?
I don't have a good recording setup! I've been thinking about it for a while, though, and I think that it would be kinda fun to submit in my own tasks. However, I don't want to revert back to camcorder videos, so I don't know. We'll see, pretty much. I also only have Mupen64, a TASing emulator, but nobody would accuse me of cheating if I were to use it anyway.

When I upload my task to Youtube/Dailymotion/Blip.tv/MegaUpload/Whatever, how should I name it?
Try to follow the scheme of “Super Mario 64 Video Quiz 2 – Level [x], Task [x]” This keeps the entries looking good and neat. In the description of the Video, put the exact task and whatever else you would like.

Okay, so I've recorded and uploaded my task... now what?
Post the link in the topic for everybody to see! If you're afraid of plagiarists, you may set the upload to private and PM it to me so that only I can see it. In fact, in some tasks, I may require that you private your video so I can see your route-making skills.

May I submit more than once to a task?
NO! There was a huge dispute over this the last time, and the answer is no. This competition is less about speed and more about intuitiveness and route planning. It's only about skill some of the time.

I accidentally didn't follow the rules, and you didn't catch it right away! I wish I could have known.
Sorry! I don't have time to watch every submission when you post them, and a lot of the time, I don't watch a whole bunch until I time them. If your task was incorrect, I'm sorry, but that's your fault. Again, I emphasize asking questions and READING THE TASK.

I'm a cheater and I cheat and you've caught me cheating. Can I come back?
In some cases, yes, after six months to a year. In other cases, no, you may not. I think that the next person that I find cheating will be banned for at least a year, if not forever. You call it playing favorites, I call it neutralizing threats. If you come forward and admit you're cheating, you'll have a much less harsh penalty.

Can I submit in every task you've had so far?
Sure, but don't expect to get that many points for it (if any). This is why the revisiting thing is there; it's so you can enjoy your favorite level if you missed it the first time around.

The Gameplay Itself

Can I start recording from a savestate?
Only if you begin recording from the Star Select screen or before you enter the level! If you begin the recording inside of the level, I will not count your entry - no exceptions!

I really want to show something else in my video. Can I do that?
Sure, but it's usually unwise in a Timed task. For Non-Timed tasks, you can, but make sure you don't break any rules!

May I add commentary/music over the video?
YES! Please, if you have the ability, add some music or commentary or something. It can get tedious listening to the same music for 15 tasks in a row, and it makes the video more interesting if you do this. If I ask for you not to do this, however, please don't. There's often a reason if I say this.

I like the way Mario looks with no cap/little health. Can I enter that way?
Unless if I specify not to, sure. A lot of the time, things like that can really help you.

I already did this task in another video I made a long time ago! Can I use that for my entry?
Nope – everything you use in an entry must be a new work. Anything old that is being reuploaded or disguised as new is not allowed.

The Gameplay Itself Continued

Ooh, I'm gonna look at the person who has the best time so far and steal his route!
No, don't do that! Half the fun of the Quiz is to think of your own strategies and plan them! If you let someone else do all the work for you, you're not going to like this Quiz. There's really no way for me to inforce this rule, however I reserve the right to accuse you of cheating at any time. If you're offended by this and you didn't cheat, don't be. Think of it as a compliment that I called you so good that I thought that you were cheating.

I have the best route ever and I don't want the guy who asked the question above me to steal it. Can I submit it at the last second?
Sure! If you don't want somebody else to steal your route, go ahead. Make sure I don't go on without you, though; you can let me know occasionally if you feel like doing this. Also, as a side note, I'm going to be more strict on the due date from now on. You really should think of uploading a little less late if you want to truly post at the "last second."

How can I get a good route?
By looking at everything in the level – the trees, poles, enemies, and especially walls. Using glitches is not only allowed, but encouraged! Anything that you can do to get a good route, think of and do. If you find a loophole in my wording, then that is fine, but occasionally I will disallow anybody else from using that loophole. Your task will still be counted for points, however.

Everything Else

BoB? LLL? WDW? Err, WTF?
Sorry Robert, but I just had to steal this question. I love it too much. Anyway, these are abbreviations for levels. The complete list is as follows:

WMOtR: Wing Mario Over the Rainbow
---
BLJ: Backwards Long Jump
PBLJ: Pause Backwards Long Jump
(thanks to ShadowOfMyles for writing the original question which I almost, but didn't, copy+paste)

Wow, I really like this Quiz! Is there a comprehensive list of every Task, Competitor and Video ever?
Actually, there is! You just have to go to www.sm64.webs.com and you'll see all of this. If it isn't updated, don't worry. I'm just being lazy. Feel free to harrass me about this, though. It may motivate me to actually do something with it. If you'd like to take over the site, that's fine (less work for me!).

I hate my life and want to commit suicide, but first, can you erase me from the database?
That's extraordinarily morbid, but the answer is no. If you compete in the Quiz, you're there forever. You can delete your videos, but please don't; it makes things much easier if there are no broken links.

My question wasn't answered here! What do I do?
Ask them in the topic! I will never ignore stupid questions – ask them, and I will surely put them in the next Quiz topic. Asking them privately is okay too, but I'd prefer if you were to ask in the topic. It helps others who may have the same question.

Everything Else Continued

You keep posting a list of people along with every task, but I'm not on that list! Why?
Only the top 20 competitors are on this list; your score is still there, though. Just go to that website linked above, and hopefully your score is there.

You're a terrible speller/writer, and I've noticed a mistake. Can I tell you?
Sure, but don't be rude about it. If you are, I'll eat your face.

I have an idea for a good task/rule! Can I tell you?
Sure! This Quiz will change a lot over the however long it will last, and I will always be ready for improvements. Sadly, I may not listen to every idea I get. I am planning a "user-generated" round later on in the quiz where I choose a task for every level that was created by somebody else.

Can I tell everybody I've ever met in my entire life about this quiz?
Of course! More competitors means more tasks, and more tasks means more fun!

Anything else?
That's about it. Have fun!

And here's the comprehensive list of every competitor and their score. I was going to post this in the last post of the second topic, but it got closed accidentally. So these results are actually as of Level 3, Task 1. I'll also include video links, since I never posted this officially.

And a new task! Enjoy. This is the penultimate one for JRB...

Video Quiz 2 – Jolly Roger Bay – Level 3, Task 3 - [40 points]

You have until this date to upload your videos: Monday, April 18th, 2011

OBSTACLE COURSE! First, kill two goombas and collect a red coin. Next, shoot out of the cannon, and then hit the blue coin switch. Some time during all of this, you must grab a shell. You may not use metal caps. Timed.

And *spoilers*, that second thing is Task 5. Since I was an idiot and posted that early, I'll post it again on the 18th. The due date for that one is the 23rd if you want to get ahead, but DON'T UPLOAD YOUR ENTRIES FOR IT. Thanks.
