Name That Tune! 2012, February: Results

#1DetroitDJ(Moderator)Posted 2/14/2012 9:28:14 PM
Contest period has closed and the period to discuss the answers openly after the contest has closed, so here it's time for your results. Apologies for the delay on these, took me a couple days to figure out how to best add up the scores from both months.

The Top 20 Entrants were:
1. ff6man -- 35 points on 17 correct answers -- Wins 100 karma!
2. Bokothechoco2 -- 35 points on 15 correct answers -- Wins 50 karma!

4. kaiserzero61 -- 28 points on 12 correct answers -- Wins 15 karma!

13. zxzxi -- 21 points on 11 correct answers
14. ssj4warrior -- 20.5 points on 7 correct answers (plus 3 correct series)
15. xp1337 -- 20.5 points on 12 correct answers (plus 1 correct series)

18. zeroexev29 -- 18.5 points on 8 correct answers (plus 1 correct series)
19. putnamehere3145 -- 17.5 points on 6 correct answers (plus 3 correct series)
20. sonten1 -- 17.5 points on 10 correct answers (plus 1 correct series)

Congratulations to the winners! You'll receive your karma prizes before long. The average score was 12.68, while the median score was 9.5. The average number of correct guesses was 8, while the median was 7. This contest was still pretty hard, though a good bit easier than the previous one.

And now, the answer key. Notes about the correct answer are included for some of the trickier ones.
1. Final Fantasy 7
2. Star Fox 64
3. Pokemon RBY

20. Tekken 2
21. Batman Returns
22. Fire Emblem 4
23. Hyperdimension Neptunia
24. ?
25. Kanon

* - the "Super" was required here as this song didn't appear in regular Street Fighter 4

Two songs were not guessed by anyone: #18 and #24. What that means is that the first person to PM me with the correct answer to each will receive 15 bonus points for their overall score (that is, the sum of their monthly scores). You don't have to wait until the next contest for that either -- you can do that any time. You're limited to one guess per week, however (so, no sending me a list of 30 possible answers).

Thanks to RaptorLC, Sonson, Tarrun, Mewtwo X9, Error1355, Fossil, SBAllen, Alucard188, BlitzBoy, Kilroy84, Team Rocket Elite, and TheOlympicHero for helping come up with the songs.

At least I'm still among the top despite how horribly I did on that last contest.

Still, this one was like even more obscure than the last. Fire Emblem 4? Even amongst Japanese-exclusive RPGs that's fairly obscure. A sane person would have gone with Seiken Densetsu 3 or something.

I also can't believe 20% of people got TMNT2. We must have only experts entering.

Congratulations to the winners!

Kind of surprised I made the Top 20 this month. I figured most of my answers would be the low point ones and so I'd end up behind. And while a lot of that is true, I guess Xenogears, Assassin's Creed II, and Tales of Symphonia were of a bit more help than I anticipated.

Looking forward to what the next theme will be now that we've finally seen an example of one of the more specific ones this time around, I have some guesses, but I suppose we'll see.

Can't believe I missed that one from FE4. It's one of my favorite games and I played it... somewhat recently. <_< Ah well, hopefully I'll do better on the next one.

Thanks again for hosting all these, DetroitDJ!

How come the Super is required for #17, but "Ultimate" isn't required for #15? Firebrand's song isn't in regular MvC3.

In fairness, the last four are intentionally ridiculously hard. We tried to make this one easier, but the last four are supposed to be nigh-impossible. That's intentional to separate the good from the great.

Oh, it was. I just forgot to specify here since unlike SSF4, no one put the less-correct answer. Mistyping it was just me being lazy I guess, but it's correct in the spreadsheet.

In fairness, the last four are intentionally ridiculously hard. We tried to make this one easier, but the last four are supposed to be nigh-impossible. That's intentional to separate the good from the great.

But it really just separates the lucky from the not so lucky, since really getting the answer or not is just a matter of whether you happened to have played that particular ultra-rare game, and with over 100000 super obscure titles you could potentially choose that's purely luck. And if you do happen to get lucky on that it's worth as much as the top 9 entries put together. The score cap for any given song should probably be 5 points, 9 or god forbid 15 points is an absurdly huge amount for a lucky guess when you consider 17 is enough for top 20 on any given contest.

IMO, a better test of skill is to choose either unlikely tracks from highly popular games, or common tracks from moderately well-known games. Which is basically what the first 20 entries or so were. The ones that are the most interesting / aggravating are definitely the ones that you either know you know but can't place, or you don't recognize but later find out it's from a game you've played.

It's not luck. The contest is a test of your game music knowledge. You didn't know those ones, but other people did.

Well there go my chances for entering. I haven't entered any yet because I was only able to get a couple of them.
