Two others have corroborated that the Sonic Generations closing song is sufficiently different, and the results (more Correct answers than Series answers) suggest there were ways to tell. Still, it's only a half point between getting it right and just getting the series right, so it wouldn't have changed the order anywhere in the Top 30. No songs were unguessed in this contest. Yay Top 3! Was pretty sure I wouldn't win, but I was hoping I could do what I failed to last time and make the Top 3. Congrats to VinnieMac and everyone else. A bit disappointed with myself on Ultima and Ace Combat, Ultima slipped my mind at some point but it was something I definitely wanted to investigate and just... forgot to. As for Ace Combat, I tried to investigate it but only could come up with Ace Combat 5 which was not a match so I made myself move on. Oh well! Also accepted Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for this since the songs are virtually indistinguishable. Hahaha, I originally was going to go with Sonic 2 but I listened to Sonic 1 for a sanity check, went "...These are the same as far as I can tell" and changed to Sonic 1 based on the "first version" rule. ** - Only accepted Sonic Generations for this. Oh good, I wasn't losing my mind. Still appreciate you running these, but despite doing pretty well this month, I think picking Game Over music as the theme was a really, really... really bad idea. Because it whole idea of naming a song based on 12 seconds of it kinda falls apart when 12 seconds is such a significant portion (or even the entirety) of the song. And when each game generally only has one game over track, it stops being "Name That Tune" and becomes "Try Everything and Hope Youtube Cooperates". Of the 15 I got, I actually "knew" like 3 of them, and the rest I got just from trying everything. And I would have gotten like 6 or 7 more if Youtube had actually had results when I searched for "tales of graces game over music" or whatever. ...At the very least, the people who complained the other months were too hard should be happy with this, though. <_<; Anyway, thanks again for the contests every month. Oh good, I wasn't losing my mind. Wow, top 20. There's a pleasant surprise (even though I'm probably the only person in the world who would be impressed with that ranking). I knew Graces would be my ace in the hole. Yeah, this theme was evil. What kind of decent player has heard the game over themes on any games made in the last 15 years? Heck, I was actively playing Disgaea 2 when this went up, and I didn't get it because I've never died in that game. Luckily I was able to guess some of these purely based on their music similarities to other tracks in their games. I was amazed that I got NES Batman and Chrono Cross. Though I must give some credit this time - The first choice in this contest is absolutely the right one to be #1 (you'll notice that absolutely everyone got it). Sonic 2 and DKC are also good choices for other "obvious" ones. Woah! I was surprised to be at the top 5, especially with thirty-nine points! However, I'm surprised that I missed Left 4 Dead and Pokemon Ranger. I kept dying to that stupid Salamence to the point where I heard the Pokemon Ranger game over theme regularly, whereas I must've skipped over the part where the sample of Left 4 Dead begins. Also, I knew that Gears 2 is a very casual-oriented game from a genra that isn't respected very much on GameFAQ's, but only six percent of entrants got it? Wow. Finally: lol Ultima 8. I loved the heck out of Ultima 4 and 7 sounds awesome as well, but 8...it's just plain bad. Total invulnerability spell near the start of the game (cancelling that awesome combat theme) and platforming mania? Check. But it has a good soundtrack, and that game over theme is fun to listen to. It's so overdramatic, like it belongs in an apocalypse! I'm not suprised that only 3% of users got it. Good contest to the all of you. EDIT: Clarification. | |
Heck, I was actively playing Disgaea 2 when this went up, and I didn't get it because I've never died in that game. D2's Game Over Theme (A Sinful Rose's Fragrance) is a remix of Sinful Rose (the opening theme) and I think it plays as a "credits" theme in the Worst Ending so you don't necessarily have to die in D2 to hear it. I agree with Kenri that this was by far the easiest contest because you could effectively brute force it with an ease not present in the previous contests. It does address the difficulty issues people have raised with prior contests, but I think it tips it too easy, personally. Unfortunately, it'll be an issue with any "theme" that plays on something a game typically only has one of, like an opening theme, credits theme, etc. I mean, it's a scheme that rewards someone as stubborn as me, if my placement here indicates anything, but eh. Extrapolating off the Ace Combat 6 and Ultima information, I think it's a reasonably safe assumption to say that 6% is equivalent to 4 entrants.
