Note that the winner has volunteered to pass on his karma prize, so all karma prizes have been bumped down by one. Note also I inadvertently copy/pasted the old karma prizes rather than the new ones for this contest -- the karma prizes actually mirror the ones from the last eight contests, not the previous ones. However, since VinnieMac passed on his prize, that does mean that everyone still receives the karma intended for their placement.

Congratulations to the winners! You'll receive your karma prizes before long. The average score was 15.71, while the median score was 14. The average number of correct guesses was 9, while the median was also 9.

And now, the answer key. Notes about the correct answer are included in the following post for some of the trickier ones.

Notes:

- By far the trickiest was #16, which comes from Four Swords Adventures. This is the item that prompted me to correct the confusing note about naming the first game in which a song appeared. I believe that there is sufficient difference to distinguish between the Four Swords Adventures version of the song and the Link to the Past version, but in retrospect it would have been easy to chalk the difference up to a bad recording. The intention with this selection was to reward those who could figure out the other songs around #16 because they would have the narrower release date range from which to choose, but note #3 did contradict that. Fortunately, however, it made no difference to the final results: those that guessed Link to the Past received only .5 points less, and all ties in the Top 10 were between people that all responded similarly to #16.

- The other game to see lots of correct series guesses was #17, Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen. For this one, though, the instrumentation was definitely noticeably different from the original Pokemon Red/Blue, and the release dates of several other games would rule out the original release.

- The only game that no one guessed is #22.

- Only one person guessed the final game, Crashmo -- congratulations to Fawful_Crump for that. That correct guess vaulted Fawful_Crump to #1 on its own; otherwise, he would have finished in 10th place. Crashmo was chosen because it was the most recent Nintendo console release for which the OST was available.

- Only two people correctly guessed #8, Red Alarm for the Virtual Boy. Congratulations to LordOfDabu and Jagr_68 -- for both, it alone vaulted them to the Top 6 from 10th and 14th, respectively.

The following chart provides the listings from most-guessed to least-guessed. The numbers to the right are read as (percent correct) / (percent series correct) / (points for correct answer).

7%? Does this mean that for all the praise the game gets from Supez fans, most haven't actually played the game? I am disappoint. =/

Also, damn, didn't VinnieMac crush the last round of NTT contests we did? Jeeze, man, you're a real pro at this.

As for giving up the karma prize, did you learn nothing from The Dark Knight?

So did I win 15 or 25 karma? It says both. ;)

I thought this contest was a lot of fun. I really like the chronological idea; makes it a lot more doable! I hope you keep that in for future contests. :)

Well, this is probably it for me and being near the tops of these contests. I may have some chance at Sony and Sega, but in both cases there's one system of theirs I don't own, and for Microsoft my entry will be "Halo" for every game so I at least get some series credit.

Giving Virtual Boy 2 entries seems kind of mean. I mean, I'm sure Nintendo (and their fans) would like nothing more than to forget it ever happened, so it gets not one, but two games? It just keeps coming back to bite them in the butt.

16 and 17 together were definitely some of the sleaziest song choices ever. I originally thought 16 was actually going to be Zelda Collector's Edition, with some minor note about how "you can hear that the gamecube doesn't emulate the SNES sound chip quite perfectly", but then I remembered four swords and sure enough I found the exact youtube file the clip is pulled from. 17, of course, is identical to the Red / Blue opening, it's just a slightly different instrumentation that tips you off (and the fact that Red / Blue couldn't fit there).

I was surprised to see Yggdra Union there. I got it (and it was actually really easy if you've played the game, that battle theme plays about a million times), it just seemed weird to have a game that actually has awesome music and is known to people who like video game music on here. If you didn't get it, do yourself a favour and listen to the game's soundtrack on youtube, it's great.

Anyway, it should be noted that 23 sounds almost identical to a song from Xenoblade, which also fits with the time window selected. With it being such a notable game, I just noted this down immediately and went on to the next game without listening to it closely enough to note that it actually wasn't that song. Kudos if that was intentional.
