Anyone know the criteria the options for the Best Review poll were chosen by?

For reference: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4965 I'm kinda baffled to not see any of discoinferno's, KMAnsem's, SuperPhilip's, HailToTheGun's, or Keyblade999's (among others), and eight of the ten didn't win Review of the Month or anything like that either. I don't really get it. --- www.DDJGames.com - Game reviews, articles, guides, lists, and more. Latest: Top 10 Games Developed By Firaxis
I would suspect that the reviews that were chosen had to be for games released in 2012, so that disqualifies some Review of the Month winners. Out of the other reviews that won Review of the Month, they had to be for noteworthy games released in 2012. A review for Mario Party 9 would not be included on this poll because it is not a noteworthy game from 2012. Not to mention, there would be very little demand for a Mario Party 9 review, in comparison to a review for FFXIII-2 or RE6. Only the big name games from 2012 would be represented in this poll. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ!
The 2002 release rule would only disqualify winners from January (I thought there might be some earlier ones, too, but I just went through and checked). It makes sense that it's only for big games (who really cares about a review for Mario Tennis Open?), but in some cases, a different review for the same game won Review of the Month than the one mentioned in the poll. For example, this review one Review of the Month for October 2012: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/638784-borderlands-2/reviews/review-152038 Yet this review for the same game is mentioned in the poll: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/638784-borderlands-2/reviews/review-151960 Ditto for this review of the month winner: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/930659-diablo-iii/reviews/review-150645 And this poll review: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/930659-diablo-iii/reviews/review-150599 Ditto this winner: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/619315-final-fantasy-xiii-2/reviews/review-149662 And this poll review: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/619315-final-fantasy-xiii-2/reviews/review-149279 Those last two are particularly strange because, in my opinion at least, there's little question that the Review of the Month-winning review is better than the poll review. In some cases, the poll-dominated review isn't even a detailed review (Assassin's Creed III, Diablo III, Final Fantasy XIII-2). The only thing I can think of that would explain all this weirdness is that these are the 10 reviews for games released in 2012 with the most hits for the year or the highest-rating reviews in the Recommendations tally. There'd be a nice objectivity there since it's more than just Allen's personal criteria, but at the same time there's an inherent problem in that the most-Recommend reviews are almost always the first ones posted, which aren't always necessarily great. I think those nominees show that: with a couple exceptions, I don't think those reviews are even the best reviews for their games, let alone for the year. But they're the first reviews posted (at least, as far as I've checked -- it's the first AC3 review and the second Borderlands 2 review posted) for the year's most popular games, so it makes sense that they received more 'Recommendations'. --- www.DDJGames.com - Game reviews, articles, guides, lists, and more. Well, I only had the one win versus three FAQs of the Month, so I didn't expect to get in, anyways. Not to mention that my only truly applicable reviews were for the big-name titles (Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon B2/W2, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star). Still, I'd take a guess at it either being hit-based or recommendation-based, so as to prevent bias from SB. Still, I don't think this is exactly the fairest way to do it. For example, prior to the application of stars, DJ was racking up more hits for his Conquest review than I was, more or less because of being closer to the top and more famous. Then there's the idea of quality - these should've been mostly chosen from the Review of the Month pool, which are chosen for their quality moreso than anything. (Of the aforementioned four reviews, even being the first (except KH3D due to a spoiler rejection), all were first-reviews, but only one won.) Recommendations and hits rarely always go to people whose reviews are pure quality. Stars are awarded in such a manner statistically, rarely with the admins' approval. There could've been bias in the very application of hits and recommendations - self-spamming, friends' spamming, or just having more popular games being reviewed. I'm not mad at this, but I do feel that this could've been done better. Mainly being chosen from the Review of the Month pool purely. Heck, SB could have just chosen them at random rather than read every one of them. (Just one for each month, probably, since January 2012 were likely December 2011 games, and December 2012 has yet to be announced.) --- Every wound a new opportunity, every curse a new challenge. -LusterSoldier- posted... I would suspect that the reviews that were chosen had to be for games released in 2012, so that disqualifies some Review of the Month winners. I wrote that review, and I agree with what you said. I'm just surprised there were no Paper Mario, Pokemon, or Kingdom Hearts reviews. --- Luigi > Mario Current Project: Revisions to KH3D FAQ | Upcoming Project: Luigi's Mansion FAQ
So VERY much so, yes. I agree. --- Every wound a new opportunity, every curse a new challenge. I shall encounter defeats... But I will not be defeated.
Yikes, some of those reviews really were a step and a half under the corresponding review of the month winner. That's too bad. --- http://www.backloggery.com/sainthegoo https://www.youtube.com/user/VicariousBrian/videos?view=1&flow=grid
i honestly agree with what has been said here, people should take more time to elect the reviews for the poll. Now, im not saying im not grateful that my Assassins creed review was elected but ive read sixty reviews that were better than mine, and theres at least 2 better reviews for that particular release that are better than mine. Maybe people should wait before recommending something unless it genuinely is of the highest possible quality. --- Where is my sanity? Have you taken my sanity away from me? |
