Magical Girl Cliches and Archetypes

#1asiacatdogbluePosted 6/17/2012 9:46:25 PM
So far, the things I did hear and read about Magical Girls are these.

The main lead's primarily color is pink.
They are clumsy, klutzy ditzes.
They love to eat snacks and sweets.
They destroy enemies with hearts, stars, and other, uh... "girly" stuff.
Clothing consists majority of red, white, and pink with lots of frills.
They don't have many real world hobbies.
Have cute and annoying familiars.
Always in love with someone
They fight as a team.

If any of these are true, then I want to know who are the biggest offenders, as well as the sole exception.

- The universal power of love and goodwill to solve the world's problems
- Inevitably, they suffer a "crisis of faith" when they allow their determination or altruism to be clouded by doubt or selfishness. They almost always get over it.
- All characters are sympathetic characters, even the bad guys are often being twisted by some intervening malicious force.

- They tend to follow messianic character archetypes, this is a pretty big one that makes an appearance in every magical girl anime I know.

So TC, Madoka is the only Mahou Shoujo you've actually watched, yes?

Yes, that's why I love magical girls.

I actually don't really like That 70's Show that much anymore.

Watching Madoka without seeing any other magical girl show lessens what you can take away from it. The whole thing was built on magical girl stereotypes and if you don't have at least a passing familiarity with the material it's subverting you'll miss things.

- The Sailor Moon manga, which is getting a re-translated re-release, bears reading.
- Cardcaptor Sakura is good
- Magic Knight Rayearth
- Lyrical Girl Nanoha, and its sequel. (I know there's a third but I haven't seen it)
- Precure

It's time to get back to our cultural roots TC. You shouldn't skip the cake for want of the frosting.

I agree with this list especially on sailormoon which is just a pretty good show in its own right. Precure is the best of the prettycure series imo, but i've only seen 3 of them.
