Might be lucky enough to get pre-generated Courtesy mail from publisher/author if they got your mail, but very few author will actually bother to reply when they got mail. Just don't expect too much for reply when you send one.

Somewhat possibly. The thing is, if you want a response back and if they do wish to respond to your letter, they're stuck coming up with the envelope, postage, and transcribing your address. Sending one along spares them the effort.
If you're concerned about your mail being a burden, and don't mind not getting a response, just don't ask any questions that would call for an answer, and send them a post card so they don't have a used envelope to dispose of.

I remember Oda once put a piece of foreign fanmail in the SBS untranslated. His reply was something to the effect of "I have no idea what this says, but I can feel your heart just by looking at the words".
Then again, Oda's more than a bit eccentric.
