OK now here's a country that builds a life-size model of a Gundam, has a Mayor & Govenor cosplay, and has actual date set-ups based on Lucky Star.

Plus they have several attractions/rides/museums just for anime/manga.

Then they are planning on building a REAL Gundam (as in it actually works).

Yeah, I would say it's pretty darn big.

Depends on what you mean by "anime". Anime in general? Pretty damn popular. The type of anime that most of OT only watch? Not that popular.

One Piece, Conan, Precure would be like stuff you see on the disney channel or cartoon network. Gundam and Evangelion is similar to Star Wars or LoTR. Most people have heard of or at least seen them but a small subgroup among them are really diehard fans and really knows the lore.

I know this is a stupid question, but what does OT stand for?

I'm talking about mainly the big shonen and shoujo adaptations of anime.

99% of all young Japanese, male or female, have seen One Piece. A huge percentage but not the majority of young girls have seen or read Skip Beat or Hana Yori Dango. If you go to a karaoke bar, you'll see Cruel Angel Thesis, Detective Conan, the Gundam theme, Sailor Moon theme, and Touch theme on the list of available songs. Most people are aware of the existence of these anime even if they have no seen it. Manga is read by people of all age during commute. Anime originals that isn't Gundam, Evangelion, or a family show like Sazae-san aren't too widely viewed.

According to this compiled list of 2013 May televised shows, anime is a mere fraction of what many channels televised:
http://animecalendar.net/

Keep in mind that this is the schedules of anime among seemingly a dozen or so different stations, making the actual televising of anime in Japan even more minuscule compared to other shows being aired.
