People exagggerate how unathletic Larry Bird was

With the way people talk about him, you'd think he was Steve Novak. The guy was actually pretty quick from looking at a lot of his games. He wasn't explosive, but he could get to the rim.

It's also because he's one of the greatest of all time, and when talking about the great ones, he's one of the more unathletic.

Because dunking was a rare event for him even though he was tall. Well, when he wasn't young, at least.

Did backpain Larry even dunk ever?

Compared to other basketball players, he wasn't very athletic. He wasn't soaring through the air and posterizing people.

When people think "athletic," they think LeBron James dunking a full-court alley-oop pass like it was nothing.

except posterizing people is just one part of athleticism. Catching your own rebound and flipping in the shot before you hit the ground? Flying by for steals? Running the floor? You guys HAVE seen footage of the guy right?

You know, you can't be unathletic and keep up with the Showtime Lakers in the finals every year.

Larry was great because of his toughness and instincts. He was about as athletic as your average YMCA dude, but he was just a step ahead of everyone else mentally.
