If Belichick retires today, is he a top 10 coach of all time?

I hate to say it but yes. He is top 10 no doubt. Besides Walsh or Landry who would you put above him?

Madden

Ok, I'll give you that. But can you name 7 more?

I absolutely adore John Madden, but not even goddamn close. Walsh, Landry, BB, Noll, Brown, Gibbs, Shula, and probably Halas are all better than Madden. He's in the group with Parcells, Johnson, and Allen, beating out Lambeau and Stram and, like, Ewbank and s***.

EDIT: So, he's probably tail end of the top 10. He was a great coach who is enormously overrated because he was also well-regarded announcer, his name is on two and a half decades of NFL video games, and he coached the perfect amount of time ago to be revered through the golden shroud of historicity but still remembered along with his accomplishments in the public consciousness. Plus, he had something of a brand with the Raiders.

If you're going to take Madden and Lambeau, then you can have all the rest of
Walsh, Landry, BB, Noll, Brown, Gibbs, Shula, and probably Halas are all better than Madden. He's in the group with Parcells, Johnson, and Allen

Maybe it's a product of being a 90s kid but I would say Madden is better than most of those coaches. Not by much and there is no telling what my opinion would be if he had coached longer. BB has 3 rings though. 3 rings = better than Madden.

Gibbs has 3 rings (all with different QBs), Walsh has 3, and Noll has 4. Landry and Shula both have 2, with another 3 and 4 SB appearances, respectively.

Easily, not sure about top 5 though. You have to compete with Noll, Lombardi, Johnson, Madden, Landry probably.

I don't know how Madden, Johnson, or even Landry could be called better. They just have the fondness of being historical going for them. Lombardi and maybe Walsh are the only two I think might oust him, personally.

It's hard to argue against Noll's 4 rings, but so much of that was just plain having a better team than anyone else, and Brown may be up there too, but again I think a lot of his fondness is being so important in ways that weren't totally reflective of his coaching prowess.

I dont think there's a coach who had a better career than Madden.
