There are some safe ways to go.

Really, the best way to stay with success and keeping people pleased is to follow through with a vision, but stay on good terms with the fans.

Primarily, indie devs have had some great success lately...

On the other hand, if the issue is purely monetary (since that's kinda important and all), better management of dev budgets can work too...

Though yeah, the problem is that you can't stop people from jumping at something and calling it the Citizen Kane of video games or the creation of tripe like Gone Home. There needs to be some laws set in place to handle video game journalism.

Look at this s***:

Honestly, there's a reason why EA is probably my favourite publisher. For all the bulls*** they get, they've had very little missteps. ME3's ending was horribly overblown by the cancerous RPG community. DA2 was bad, I'll give the fans that, but every other game EA has released in that time has been freaking amazing. When companies stop giving a f*** what nerds online think is when we get the best games.

Obv smaller companies are different, but they tend to have good relations with consumers regardless e.g. Paradox, THQ (RIP), Nintendo second parties

I think the SJW hysteria is a little exaggerated honestly. Like I agree it's annoying but it's not actually doing anything to hinder the industry. Also that first pic is dumb as hell.

[stuff about /v/]

From what I've seen /v/ is as bad as //rgames or NeoGAF. They pretend they're above the circlejerking but they're honestly not. They have this group of games and companies they worship and they shun everything else. Also, their business analysis is f***ing laughable. It's teenagers trying to talk about business and finance when they've read a couple BusinessInsider articles. Horrid.

Yeah, the fan-base and media are far more destructive than the developers. The fans never know what the **** they want, and the media and "journalists" don't seem to understand just how damaging their often ignorant or misinformed editorials can be.

With developers, you either buy their product if it entices you or ignore it if you aren't interested. That's it. No useless bickering on the Internet necessary.

Since /v/, Reddit and NeoGAF are being discussed, I figure it's worth mentioning that the state of /v/ has gotten so bad I had to abandon browsing that garbage board entirely. The decent threads are completely washed out by people making a conscious decision to be ****ing stupid; I just can't do this **** anymore.

GameFAQs has its share of morons too, but at least here no one can hide their idiocy behind anonymity, and I can flag clear violations with confidence that a mod will handle it.

I agree with this 100%.

For me, great games are defined by how well they merge gameplay, story, and atmosphere. A great game has an amazing story, but I'd rather play a game with great gameplay and a nonsensical/simple story than a game that focuses on story but has generic gameplay. There's some exceptions to that (e.g. Spec Ops The Line) but generally this has been true for all my games.

That said, the vast majority of my favourite games (not counting lolracing games) have a great story. So I mean, that's really important too.

I just can't handle not being able to call someone a complete f***ing idiot waste of space degenerate who needs to go kill themselves on here. It needs to be done so often but it's impossible due to mods.

Best part of /v/ is that is my words aren't restricted. That works against the board but ultimately I'd want it more than I'd want to get rid of it.

Eh. Different ploys for different goys, I guess. When I run into someone who doesn't deserve to live, I just wipe my ass with them and go about my business. No one's baiting this guy.

I wouldn't mind an experience if there was substance behind it, but yeah, that's never the case. I'm not interested in playing a movie with controllers.

I think I saw a trailer for it playing on the tv hooked to a PS3 at walmart recently. I liked the music, at least.

Oh I forgot about Palutena! She would be GREAT! :D

I'd take her or Medusa since both are important enough to Kid Icarus and offer up a bit of variety, though with Medusa we'd get another female and a villain and more villains would always be nice, especially since we haven't had a female villain in Smash yet.

I was hoping Ike would still be in and then Lucina would replace Marth, since she looks like him and should have a similar fighting style (small, agile, etc.) Lucina >>>> Chrom imo. I found Lucina much more memorable than Chrom. But I have a feeling we're going to get Marth and Chrom as our FE reps. :/

Marth is a franchise rep, can't really cut him since he's the most identifiable character of the series. Chrom is pretty much the most identifiable character of Awakening besides Robin. What I could see happening is Robin being in, or even having some utilization of the Pair Up mechanic to make a duo work (Chrom and Robin or Chrom and Lucina are the ones I'd expect). I am curious what'll happen with Ike though. I think Lucario returning gives Ike some potential, not sure if 3 Fire Emblem reps would work out.

From some screenshots it seems you can play as the Male Wii Fit Trainer too...? I'm not sure if those were fake or not. If so, we should have several "gender choice" characters. The Pokemon Trainer would be a great option. I wish they would include different trainers from different regions to be, but I'm sure we're just gonna get stuck with Red again, which is fine I guess.

Yeah, Male Wii Fit Trainer was confirmed by Sakurai in one of the daily updates. I'd prefer to have a more recent trainer be used to represent the games. Sick of the gen 1 pandering in Smash Bros. It's annoying how Melee's Pokemon reps were Mewtwo (gen 1 legendary, original moveset) and Pichu (gen 2 baby Pokemon, clone of Pikachu). And then gen 3 got skipped completely (though files in Brawl indicate that Plusle and Minun were heavily considered for the game, they probably got axed so we could have more gen 1 with Pokemon Trainer). At this point, Lucario in Smash almost feels like a stroke of luck.

Hmmm I guess you're right. The artist does seem to be better with females than males. Interesting. O: I guess that seems to be the issue here. I have nothing against his art, but I'll always like the art in PoR and others like it 100 times better. :/ But given the 3 different art styles since FE10, I'd say that artist is out of commission. D:

He can do some interesting designs but they were mostly the types of characters that I couldn't see being fitting in with most of the adults or the children.

Steambox and Amazon are misguided attempts to enter a dying market imo. Sony and MS just don't have the clout they did last generation. Last gen went on way too long, which allowed PC to catch up and surpass anything that either company could've done.

PCs pretty much caught up and surpassed consoles early on, like as soon as Crysis happened.

Last gen's Sony is my least favourite gaming company ever. After they fired all the stuck in the past Japanese people and brought in some younger people with actual international experience, they got a lot better.

The problem with MS is that they don't understand their audience. They're trying to please everyone, but the thing is gamers don't want Kinect and the general public still hates games and sees them as timewasters. So they're getting hated on by gamers and the general public doesn't care about the Xbox One. Add that to the fact that the Xbox One is honestly only useful in the States, and MS has dug themselves into a massive hole.

I pretty much agree about Nintendo there.

Not sure what that last sentence means >_>

Sony management is a funny thing. The way it used to operate was that they'd get rid of their good people as soon as a product was released and made its success. Something about avoiding issues with retirement for them, I think? Anyways, they scared off most of their good people to guys like Samsung due to that. That level of arrogance eventually spilled into the Playstation brand. Now it's Kaz Hirai in charge and he sees Playstation as his baby so it's getting the attention it needs... At the expense of the rest of the company, of course

Microsoft figured they could carry over the success of the Kinect but they should've realized that what helped them the most was that the Wii was able to generate interest in that type of stuff in the first place and that the Kinect was different enough from the Wii in order to generate interest in itself too. What also helped was that it was just an extension to the 360, not the entire system. In any case, I wonder I wonder if they can give the 360 success in Japan with the marketing methods they've used for Windows and Internet Explorer there

In case you don't know, all they did was make Internet Explorer-tan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHTUlF7NA2o

Japan loves its cute girls. Also what I meant was that sony's fandom being the worst is pretty much an undeniable fact

Meh, the "art" type of games are all indies anyway who have very little bearing on the industry itself other than reviewers circlejerking amongst themselves about how deep it is just so they feel better about themselves. Game journalism is worse than tabloid rags.

"Art" games are pretty much anything that take a try at realism and pushing issues of some sort into the game. The Last of Us and its recent DLC with underaged interracial lesbians is pretty much a prime example of that. That s*** was basically Gone Home on a larger scale

As for SJWs, s*** like Sessler b****ing about the trophy in God of War and the devs responding by actually taking out the trophy is s*** I don't want to see. Best thing that came of them was their complaining about Dragon's Crown becoming unintentional free advertisement for the game. Also first pic is truth.

Pfft, I wish it was that easy. Anytime something becomes popular enough, there's always a good chunk of the board that becomes more vocal in how much they don't agree with the people who like whatever that thing is.

Closest thing to what you're describing are the Souls f***ers but even then if you try to praise FromSoftware on that level or say how X game should be more like Dark Souls, you'll likely get attacked for it now. Can't name any console manufacturer (no, not even Nintendo) because there's some level of brand loyalism that leads to people shunning other systems (as well as whatever individual issues there are, like with Nintendo's region locking), can't name Valve because of the staunch anti-DRM people, and... can't really come up with anyone else. Everyone else is either too small or nowhere near liked enough to really be worth noting. PC gaming in general could work I guess.

And maybe two of these guys:

For me, it's gameplay > music > characters > art style > general plot > graphics

Or something along those line, anyways. Don't care much for the story, but give me some likable characters and I'm good.

Gameplay is self-explanatory. Music is perfect for setting up the mood of a game. Metal Gear Rising was made ten times more fun for me simply due to how the music played into the gameplay. I can also appreciate a neat art style though I can work with most things in that regard.

And it was through this that I came to love Platinum. They practically design their games as if they had me in mind. Fast and fun gameplay, awesome music, silly over-the-top stories/characters, and they can vary in art styles nicely.
