J KochPosted 5/9/2012 3:35:07 AM | I play whoever I happen to like playing as. Being able to win with that character is nice too. So pretty much "I play the best character that I like to play."
Same. Although I always play with Nightmare in Soul Calibur... I'd even use him if he was the undeniable worst character in the game. --- ---./|,-``\(o)_\,----,,,_....................................2002-2012 ---( `\(o),,_/` : o : : :o `-,.......................Ten Years Wasted |
bIuerainPosted 5/9/2012 6:40:37 PM | ^^^Fortunately, nowadays he's often considered the best in SC5. Weird how quickly he shot from being considered one of the worst to one of the best. --- Funky Strong "Date vuelta. Veras el color rojo cuando termine contigo..." - Vega |

IAmMC2Posted 5/9/2012 10:52:10 PM | You forgot the creepy otaku who picks characters based on their fetishes. --- Now anticipating: Anarchy Reigns, Persona 4 Arena, PS AllStars Battle Royale, Paper Mario 3DS, Super Smash Bros Wii U. |
bIuerainPosted 5/10/2012 3:44:55 AM(edited) | ^^^I always think less of those guys who exclusively play cutesy anime female characters. The guys who only pick Juri or Sakura in SF and run the Kula/Yuri/Athena team in KOF. Alyssa players, maybe subbing Ling, Asuka and Lili. Why are you going to tournaments and playing competitively if you can't even bring yourself to play a male character? So you care about winning but not enough to play as a character you don't want to have sex with? Also it's creepy. --- Funky Strong "Date vuelta. Veras el color rojo cuando termine contigo..." - Vega |
bIuerainPosted 5/10/2012 3:43:27 AM | But the guys who always play the androgynous females are fine. Those peeps have refined tastes and are real bros. --- Funky Strong "Date vuelta. Veras el color rojo cuando termine contigo..." - Vega |
Misdreavus573Posted 5/10/2012 9:39:01 AM | Although I used to be the type to only think about playstyle in the past, now I generally have a two step process on how I choose characters:
1) Look at all of the characters that I like the aesthetic, design, or personality of.
2) Out of only those characters, choose the one who's playstyle and toolset I like the most, or I feel the most comfortable with.
If you're really going to enjoy playing a fighter, you need to enjoy the way a character plays (rushdown, zoning, grappler, etc.), but at the same time you also need to love the character behind it. IMO, both are important.
For example, SSF4. I enjoy and feel most comfortable zoning, but I'm not picking someone like Ryu, Guile, Dhalsim, or Sagat because I just don't really like them.
Instead, I'll pick someone like Juri (with her Fuhajin projectiles), Vega (with his long-range pokes), or Rose (a little of both). They mesh with my playstyle, but I also really like the characters behind them, so I'll have much more fun and passion playing them. |
I Celph DivinePosted 5/10/2012 4:33:20 PM | i'm a hipster tierwhore
my favorite characters are the good characters people don't play much (ryu 3s), and then if i lose i resort to the best characters that i enjoy (yun/ken/dudley)
generally i end up playing yun/dudley anyways because they're the most fun
in t5 when i got really far at evo i played nina (top tier but not the best) and when i did money matches i played all of them with regular jin, which was my favorite char at the time. nobody played regular jin.
as far as current fighting games outside of me playing 3s i just use the characters that seem the most basic but still good. jack in t6br, jack/paul in ttt2, siegfried in sc5, ryu in sf4, dante/magneto/sentinel in mvc3, etc --- the old lead by example approach www.twitter.com/jamesseverin www.facebook.com/ughjames |
wrex_vas_iktomiPosted 5/11/2012 1:47:56 AM | DragonPick posted... Part Casual part normal then... I kinda play characters based on two things. If I like them or if I like how they play. Although I don't like how any of those Normal characters play
I guess I'm pretty much the same.
I usually pick characters based on my personal preferences. If there are muay thai style characters, they have my first preference, followed by ninja/samurai, followed by fighting styles of other characters I prefer, followed by characters who look appealing (cool, flashy, whatever).
So what about MMA fighting games, what do you guys focus on then?
Looks, attributes, real-life fighter stats? |
