I decided a 3rd party would be best to explain it.

And now PTP, you owe me an apology. Not only have you been the most vocal in saying I don't know what I'm talking about, you've accused me of making this personal (in the other thread).

You claimed to be the bigger person and admit your mistakes. I'm waiting.

For everyone else, I strongly recommend you read through eternallyconfuzzled.com, and then start working through other a few of the other data structures from other sources. You should know this stuff. Not a fuzzy idea of it, so you can throw out 79k for 20k element hash table, you should know this stuff cold.

Especially for the younger people. You have no idea where your career is going to take you. Maybe you'll stay on the web for the next 40 years, but it's unlikely. Maybe you'll go into another career. Probable according to the statistics. But while you're here, you need to be flexible in your understanding, whether or not you use this stuff directly. Do you want to be the pinch hitter that can't steal a base?

This stuff is core, and the old timers who got it wrong should be ashamed of themselves.

Using reddit as a credible source? No thank you. Get an actual third party. I don't go to reddit, 9gag , or chans. Dregs of the internet. You want that to tell me hash tables?

Nope.avi

I haven't really been following this discussion. But Skel, I am very impressed with how you was able to produce such a massive flame war between the resident trolls with such little effort on your part. And you got the smart ones too, not just the silly trolls who never say anything interesting.

RP, I'm not really seeing the point you're trying to make. I read through several of the comments on the reddit page (including the one that calls you a bad name :) but it's not clear to me what point you're trying to illustrate. I admit, I've only skimmed the discussion so far.

The person who's pushing "all data structures are basically linked lists" didn't understand Hash Tables on anything more than a very generic level. The result is that his calculations were off, and not by a small amount either.

It illustrated exactly why I disagreed with Skels assessment of Data Structures.

And I went to a 3rd party to end the discussion. It's done. Whether anyone in this thread is big enough to admit it or not, the explanation they couldn't seem to understand has been made clear for them, and it was done by a neutral 3rd party.

Now lets see if PTP is willing to admit the mistake.

Skel didn't say it was a hash table with 20,000 elements in it, he said it was a hash table with 20,000 buckets. Pretty big difference.
