DEM FEATZ I liked the style feats. I like how the multiclass had Skill Training baked in. For better or worse most of the later themes give out skill bonuses as features. But that's a very limited solution. You can't just smush crap feats together and hope they turn into diamonds. Tacking on minor benefits to stuff that's already usable doesn't necessarily make it that much better. I think I've said this before, but really, feats aren't the bandaid that can shore up systemic issues. Especially if we go back into Big Stupid Fighter territory. Skillmonkey I'm skeptical as usually this devolves into +2 here, reroll there bonuses rather than anything you know, interesting. Plus you know, Scroll of Knock, the random +20 competence spell etc. --- Meet Gabriel Belmont and his Vampire Killer!
http://community.wizards.com/dndnext/blog/2012/05/10/goblins_care_only_about_your_axe I'm baffled gentlemen. What is this blog about? At first I thought it was going to be about how many hit points monsters have and then... it just went off into a territory where nothing was said. Like... I don't know what to make of this. What have I learned here? I take that back. We never learn anything from these blogs. What is even being REITERATED here? 5e will have abilities that push people? Confirming what you said before that the rules are being designed to be played without grids? How about a far more engaging topic of discussion: "What sort of encounter should two goblins guarding a cave be?" Clearly, the first instinct is that it should be a combat encounter. The players are very likely to attempt to kill the guards and the guards may fight back if they think they have a chance (unlikely) or run for help (far more likely). Alternatively the players may attempt to sneak passed the guards without being noticed. Either way the main objective, at least in my eyes, should not be "kill the guards". It should be some sort of skill challenge which can use combat as a skill of sorts. What do you guys think? --- In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress. John Adams (1735 - 1826)
I got nothing. He managed to say a whole lot of nothing in that post. I think they're running out of design ideas and don't know how to fill the space. I'm not really even sure what the point of this TotM/grid combat idea was. Was it really that hard to switch from TotM to grid combat in previous editions? My groups have never had trouble with it, and our simple rule has always been that you pull out the grid when you roll initiative. If the encounter is serious enough for initiative, it's serious enough for full combat rules. If you're not going that in-depth, you can just wing it and estimate to make stuff work without the grid. It's really not rocket science to wing simple stuff without a grid. As far as I can tell, they're creating an imaginary problem by saying the TotM needs more support; it's very easy to do quick-and-dirty conversions while you're playing. --- I once dug a pit and filled it with clouds...or was it clowns.... come to think of it, it began to smell... must have been clowns... From: Baruch_S | Posted: 5/10/2012 7:07:47 PM | #064 According to OSR people, grids became a serious problem and/or threat to TotM playing after [Insert Edition They Stopped At Here] and since 5e's propaganda is all about recruiting OSR people, they're going to pander to them like there's no tomorrow. Speaking of the OSR crowd, apparently D&D With Pornstars' Zak S. and the RPGPundit, among others, are paid consultants on the 5e project. --- This sig is original!

From: MrGreenonion | Posted: 5/12/2012 12:50:49 AM | #067 I have no idea. I know he calls people swine, but that's about it. I've heard mixed things about the guy, but I don't frequent his board. Maybe he's cool, I don't know. --- This sig is original!
Oh yeah the swine guy is the tobacco guy. I remember seeing him when I was perusing grognards.txt, he was one of their top grogs, at least for as far as I got into it. --- SuperNiceDog didn't have to reconcile his name... But Dauntless Hunter is now MrGreenonion
He's saying that using mini's takes too much effort for small encounters. Thus lazy DMs won't use the grids because it'll make a five minute encounter into a ten minute encounter. Thus, when players do see the grids, part of the suspense is taken away because the encounter might make them think for once. It's not that hard to understand what he's saying. However, it IS hard to understand that yes, he really thinks this. --- Welcome to GameFAQs, where you're lucky if people read your entire topic title before answering, let alone your post. - JohnnyShred612 |
