My friend feels that Breaking Bad should have concluded after Season 4.

Your friend is partially right. The show could ended, but it also had more left in the tank. It would have worked ending it at season 4. There arent any HUGE points that are left over, but there are definitely underlying pieces. But they did a good job at tying everything together.

The pieces they have left to go on are the most sparse that they have had the entire span of the show. It would have made sense to end it, but it also makes sense to keep pushing.

All this makes me fortunate that Season 5 will be the final one. I have faith there will be plenty of story to tell for one last season, but that's it.

Hank chasing Walt alone can cover the majority, I feel. If Jesse finds out about "lily of the valley", the fallout from that can be volcanic. Walt may be full Heisenburg now, but all it takes is for a huge tragedy of sorts to reel him back to ground zero and witness a 'fall' instead of a 'rise'.

It is possible if for some reason S5 doesnt match the hype I would agree with this - I would prefer the show ends on a high note and it will be really, really hard to top Season 4 but I said the same thing after S2, and again after S3. Hope 14 months from now I will laught at myself for being nervous about S5.

If season 4 last episode was the series finale it would have been terrible - no resolution to major issues on the show.
