Eh, it's McNulty still IMO, even despite his almost complete absence in season 4. He has almost twice as many lines as any other characters across the 5 seasons (I think Kima, Daniels and Bunk are the only people who are close) and he's usually advertised as the core character, as his traits really kind of represent the problems of the war on drugs between police and gangs as a whole. He's a flawed man in a flawed system in a flawed culture.

He's the central characters in seasons 1 and 5 for sure, with a pretty major role in 2 and 3 as well. 4 was strange in this regard.

I think Carcetti best exemplifies a lot of the major themes in The Wire, but no, he is not the main character of the series.
