can anyone explain why Argo is winning best picture at all the awards shows?

I think it has 3 best picture awards...there are easily 2 or 3 movies better (Lincoln, Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook for sure) and likely a few more...this is basically them buying the awards for Ben isn't it?

I think it is a better overall film than any of the three that you mentioned.

Lincoln - horribly cheesy opening and closing scenes, awful performance from Sally Field
Life of Pi - way too slow to get into the story, bad framing device, poor handling of the underlying philosophical question
Silver Linings Playbook - wasted a great premise and cast on a cliche-ridden second half

I liked all of the movies to some extent, but Argo had fewer flaws than these.

Because it's pretty great and clowns the three you mentioned.

Still, I wish the awards were going to ZDT or Django.

This. I would have been more on board with the TC if he'd mentioned ZDT, Django, or hell... even The Master as his alternatives.

Well the Master hasn't been really in contention of the very biggest awards but in the spirit of just generally what I wish were winning awards, that too.

It's obviously a conspiracy.

That, or the critics have different tastes than yours.

This is actually why, by the way.

Though not really critics because I don't think they're really involved in like the BAFTAs and the Globes and whatnot, just generally "people."

I wouldn't want to be friends with anyone who genuinely thinks Argo was the best movie of last year (it wouldn't be in my Top 30), but it makes sense as a consensus pick. It's a solid popcorn thriller that doesn't really engage the intellect, while at the same time seeming to carry some semblance of seriousness due to its honest-to-goodness geo-political backdrop. It also demonstrates that movies and movie people are important, and that American ingenuity triumphs over hostility. There's a lot to walk away feeling good about, and not a lot to challenge the sensibilities of even the most delicate of viewers.

It's probably the most conventional film among the nominees; certainly it's the "easiest" to watch and thus the hardest to outright dislike. The other films mentioned in this topic have a bit more reach to them; either their goals are loftier or they attempt to circumvent convention in different and potentially off-putting ways. And they're more divisive because of it.

Plus, you know, those handsome fellas Clooney and Affleck have been furiously hobnobbing with voters in special private screenings. It wouldn't take much for Clooney to convince me to vote for him either.

Also: Holy **** I just noticed Argo also won the USC Scripter award for best adapted screenplay, which I guess is just another stop on its way to winning the Oscar over Lincoln in the same category. That's gonna look mightily embarrassing in the years to come.

Argo's screenplay isn't great but the other two that have any chance of winning the Oscar (SLP and Lincoln) are two of the three worst things nominated in the entire ceremony so I sure as hell hope it wins Screenplay
