Is Donnie Darko a pretentious film?

I adored the movie when I was 15 and haven't seen it since then, but I get this impression that it's something only a teenager can enjoy. The only scenes I remember from the movie today seem very contrived and trying too hard to be "deep." Am I right?

It's arguably the best movie of the decade.

Jake Gyllenhaal honestly deserved an oscar nod.

This. It's a mainstream friendly psychological film. There are plenty of better that far outclass it like Jacob's Ladder and Eraserhead.

It's not a bad film by any means, but it's nowhere near the "mindf***" people overblow it to be nor is it one of the best.
