Wasn't Picard a little harsh on Wesley in "The First Duty"?

The speech he gave him seemed kind of harsh to me. I realize it was wrong of Wesley to hide what happened but Picard really ripped into him. --- .....
I don't think so, Picard had every right to be pissed at Wes considering all he had done for him and taught him over the years. --- http://i42.tinypic.com/2j68pb4.jpg http://i40.tinypic.com/2qwh3x5.jpg www.last.fm/user/Xorneto || www.rateyourmusic.com/~RedNave
Wesley lied under oath in an investigation on the death of a cadet.... how was Picard suppose to act other than to get in Wesley's face. It was a nice contrast with how Bev was, I love her line "The tape made it look like you were lying." No DOCTOR he was lying. But I guess a mother is going believe her son over irrefutable evidence. So we need Picard to be Daddy and give Wesley a spanking. That is probably my favorite episode to hate Wesley over, even though I feel Picard was 100% right, I also feel Wesley betrayed Locarno and the rest of the squad. Wesley did nothing but **** up in this episode. --- Starfire: "They are too numerous to fight. What shall we do ?" Robin: "Fight anyway !"

Wesley did nothing but **** up in this episode. Honestly, I never hated Wesley while he was on the show, and I didn't even realize until long after the show ended that so many other people did. The only episode where I thought he was a jerk was his final appearance where he throws himself a pity party, gives up Starfleet in a pout, and goes sulking off with the Traveler because he was "meant" for that kind of life. Riiiight... Anyways, Wesley telling the truth didn't bother me so much. Personally, I thought Locarno was the bad guy for disguising his bullying through eloquent smooth-talking to try to cover everything up, a typical move for verbal abusers. I don't remember if it's ever directly stated, but as the team leader I have to think it was his idea to perform the illegal maneuver that got their teammate killed in the first place. Also, this isn't the only example of a Next Gen main character doing this very thing. I mean, does Riker catch flak from fans for ratting out his old captain in the episode "The Pegasus?" Still, it is interesting to me that even the writers disagreed on how Wesley should inevitably have handled this problem when the episode was being made. To me, many of the best Next Gen episodes are those where the problem is so difficult to solve that you can see both sides of the argument, or where you don't see the real problem until much later in the show (see "The Drumhead" for such an episode). --- "Whats more important in a console? i thought it was his personal disappointment in wesley that really fueld that. being almost like a son to him, its obvious he became quite fond of him. Far from the "get that thing off my bridge" phase. its nothing like the out of character ass ripping he gave ro in her final episode. He went from supportive to threatening with court martial when she came to him and honestly said she was having second thoughts about the mission.
I don't remember if it's ever directly stated, but as the team leader I have to think it was his idea to perform the illegal maneuver that got their teammate killed in the first place. I may be remembering wrong, but I do believe it was explicitly stated that it was Locarno's idea and he got them all to go along with it. Now that I'm thinking of it, that may have been during Picard's speech - where he was 'theorizing' about what happened, so I suppose not quite directly stated. --- ---
This is why people hate on Wes. He has a very annoying personally at times. But so does Picard. There are some moments id like to kick his ass. When Lilly gave him a good talking to on first contact, that kind of ass kicking. --- I'm Cheesy, who are you? I"m on the fritz and I'm hungry for numbers!
Wait, he lied under oath, while in service, about someone's death, and all that happened was Picard scolded him? He's lucky that's all he got. Either that, or disciplinary measures changed dramatically. --- I'll fix your feet til you can't walk, I'll lock your jaw so you can't talk. iirc, they were going to expel all of nova squad for the incident, but nick lacarno basically pleaded with the academy leadership to go easy on the rest of nova squad (saying that he put them up to it, etc.). --- xbl gamertag: Locutus441 psn id: locutus442
As everyone else has said, considering how much Wesley ****ed up, Picard was nowhere near as harsh as he justifiably could have been, both as his CO and mentor. --- ~ The Vic Viper ~ "I have nightmares about hell, where all I do is add up numbers and try to have conversations with people like you." |
