When Hagrid reveals to Harry that he is a wizard and introduces him to the wizard world, Harry is initially concerned he won't be able to afford any school supplies due to not having any money. Hagrid, of course, takes him to Gringott's Bank where Harry finds out his parents had a large sum of money in their bank vault which of course Harry inherited upon their deaths.

Harry had so much money in there that he felt that the prize money of *I think* a thousand Galleons from the Triwizard Tournament is something he does not need (in addition to his guilt over Cedric's death) and gives to Fred and George to fund their joke shop exploits. This would probably imply that Harry was somewhat wealthy and had a decent net worth.

So what do you guys think James and Lily did for a living? Auror? Cursebreaker? Healer at St. Mungo's? Dragon tamer? I'm forgetting the other wizarding world professions but they must have done something to earn that sum of wealth legally since neither were considered Dark wizards/witches. Did Rowling ever say what they did in an interview or something? Or maybe there was a line in the books that I'm forgetting?

It's very likely that James inherited a lot of money from his parents. James comes from a very old wizarding family, being a descendent of one of the Peverell brothers (which is how he inherited his cloak).

It says as much in the Harry Potter Wiki, though I don't know how reliable the article is:

Yeah, like we find out in the fifth book, his parents were part of the Order of the Phoenix. James did inherit a lot of money, so he didn't really need a well-paying profession to support Lily and himself. Here is a list of details that J.K. Rowling revealed after the last book came out:

Look at the response to this question:

Harry often wondered about his parents lives before he died. What did Lily, James, Remus, Lupin and Sirius do after Hogwarts?

JKR: To take Remus first, Remus was unemployable. Poor Lupin, prior to Dumbledore taking him in, lead a really impoverished life because no one wanted to employ a werewolf. The other three were full-time members of the Order of the Phoenix...So that's what they did, they left school. James has gold, enough to support Sirius and Lily. So I suppose they lived foff a private income. But they were full-time fighters, that's what they did, until Lily fell pregnant with Harry. So then they went into hiding.

Also, from an interview in 2001: http://www.cesnur.org/2001/potter/march_03.htm

What did James and Lily Potter do when they were alive?

J.K. Rowling: Well, I can't go into too much detail, because you're going to find out in future books. But James inherited plenty of money, so he didn't need a well-paid profession. You'll find out more about both Harry's parents later.

I believe that Rowling stated that James was independently wealthy, due to an inheritance from his parents.

Wouldn't surprise me also if the money inherited had been invested, at least until Harry could touch it.

It's not a contest, sweets.

But just to let you know, you should never use any Wiki as your sole source.

No ****, but two other people had already posted as much in greater detail hours before your pitiable contribution to the question. And at least I actually provided a source, despite what you think about wikis (which are perfectly fine for the conversation at hand, since I'm not exactly doing a research paper or anything).

So basically, people like Vernon and Marge weren't really lying when they called James a filthy layabout?
