So what does this board (particularly RYTHEO) Think of Stalin and the USSR?

And why the USSR collapsed?

Was Stalin truly paranoid? Should he be emulated?

And if the USSR was so great how come so many people fled and had to be kept there at machinegun-point?

Wait...how are you coming up with the assumption that the USSR was a great place to be? Who have you talked to to even come up with that in the first place?

Rytheo has personally said it was great, I really look forward to hearing why he thinks so.

someone sure has a hell of an axe to grind

And why the USSR collapsed?

The USSR collapsed due to fundamental flaws in its political structure, though the collapse itself can be directly attributed to Gorbachev. While I might like to blame the fall solely on revisionism , the fact that the system allowed revisionists to assume power indicates a flaw with regards to succession that would need to be addressed in any future attempts.

I'm not going to answer these questions because you are not asking them in good faith.

What makes you say that it was a bad place to be? Like the USSR performed better than all of the FSU does today on almost every statistic(inb4 a really groanworthy post) so really the only justification for your post is either a naive comparison between the top of the first world and the USSR or some dumb secrit polic lollolollolololol reason.

WAS Stalin paranoid, yes or no? And how come you have never ever ever ever admitted there were flaws in the USSR's system? Or are you trying to say it was flawed solely in the sense that it allowed Gorbachev and co to get into power?

So, 'dear leader had a habit of killing people or sending them to the gulag on a paranoid whim' doesn't count as reason to say it sucked, then.

Okay, how about this, a good portion of Russia is a frigid hell hole<_<

Rytheo feels that since the odds of any individual getting swept up in a random Secret Police sweep is low, that that makes things all better.

Also, Rytheo, whats your explanation for people fleeing Cuba, again? IIRC you said that they were ALL rich (greedy) people...

And that all of the Venezeulans that got their radio stations, etc, taken away were probably foreign agents...?

OH and that reminds me, how about you tell the board how you feel about the Rocket Attacks against Israel?

To be fair, that same idea is used fairly often in defense of certain US laws and policies (as well as in other nations).

Well, there are some crazy folks who would argue that the total lack of political freedom constitutes it being a "bad place to be."
