Question for those who think spending cuts are the answer

#1Billy_Bob_JoePosted 7/6/2011 11:32:30 PM
Does anyone really think for a moment that, were Congress to pass more spending cuts today, that the resulting freed up revenue would go to paying down the deficit? Or do you think a more likely scenario would be that our elected officials would act like they won the lottery and waste it all on a bunch of tax cuts we don't need?

Strawman topic that makes absolutely no sense at all and fails on its own merits

Let's do a little something called math.

If the deficit is $1 billion dollars, and you slash $500 million in spending, the deficit is now $500 million.

Do you see how that works? Nothing has to be allocated for, it happens on its own.

However, with a tax increase, the hypothetical(yet unrealistic) extra revenue brought in has to actually be allocated to paying down the debt. Instead, as past history shows, politicians will spend whatever money they can get their hands on and then some.

Tax cuts are great if they are paired with reduction in spending. Unfortunately we don't get that when taxes are cut.
