"House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) ó who is spending millions of taxpayer dollars opposing marriage equality ó told ABCís This Week that he could never see himself supporting same-sex unions, despite the growing evolution towards marriage for all within the Republican Party.

Responding to Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) change of heart on the issue, Boehner said that he ďappreciatesĒ his friendís new position, but insisted that ďI believe that marriage is a union of a man and a womanĒ and predicted that he would not change his mind even if he found out that his own son is gay:

MARTHA RADDATZ (HOST): Can you imagine yourself in a situation where you reversed your decision as Portman has on gay marriage if a child of yours or someone you love told you they were gay.

BOEHNER: Listen, I believe marriage is a union between one man and one woman. Itís what I grew up with, itís what i believe, itís what my church teaches me and I canít imagine that position would ever change."

I wish people remembered the whole "separation between church and state"

Too bad your church's positon isn't what determines American law.

Portman and Cheney would have said similar things not too long ago. Hell, I would have said the same thing before me and my gay brother came to terms.

It's one thing to say how you'll be in that situation, but when it actually comes around...

It depresses me how many people can't empathise with someone else's situation unless it actually physically happens to them.

Well, based on dickholes like Bohner, his church's position IS what determines American law.

The Church does not teach right and wrong in isolation. We must be loyal to that which is great. Family is great, but what if there are things that are even greater?

Sadly that's just human nature. People tend not to care about anyone outside their own group. I think it's called the "monkeysphere" or something.
