If Capitalism undermines democracy, what is the alternative?

Mixed economy.

What really undermines democracy is the fact that free speech is so restricted. Under Canadian federal elections laws, third party organisations can't campaign on behalf of a party or individuals.

You want to take out an ad saying how you think so-and-so is great? That's illegal.

Free speech? What free speech?

Indeed. Just the other day I tried to take out an ad saying Fischer Stevens was great and was not allowed to and then BAM! I was in a Serbian Prison without a trial.

Speech is free, but it's gonna cost you.

But it isn't, though; that's what's so terrible. I can't use my money to speak my mind.

It's like living in the Soviet Union; freedom of speech was guaranteed under law, but owning a printing press was illegal.

I was summarizing the position you were advocating.

Ah, well, that's a bit of a misdirection: speech is free for everyone, and it's an equal right (unless you challenge multiculturalism, or protest abortions, then you'll get locked up for "promoting hate"). But it's the same as my right to own property; I have the right to own it, that doesn't mean I don't have to pay for it myself.

People (in the United States) don't get locked up for opposing multiculturalism or protesting abortion clinics or promoting hate groups for that matter.

Yeah, well, it's a more free country. We should aspire to emulate the United States in that respect.

Yes, the one thing America does do really well compared to other Western countries is free speech.
