2,000 year old Damascus synagogue looted and burned to the ground.

I can't believe I'm gonna do this.... but I partly agree with Orca. Human life is far more important than stone, no matter how old or significant you think it is. A tragedy that this synagogue is gone? Sure. A loss of a national treasure? Definitely. Should we be appalled that so many historical treasures, especially non-muslim ones in muslim countries get destroyed, and that they're destroying their own heritage? Yes.

Is it at all more important then the loss of life in the Syrian civil war, which we haven't talked about much on this site? No. Every day that the syrian civil war continues, that the syrian government murders it's citizens, that it uses cluster bombs and other various weapons to kill, is more important than this building.

Find someone in this topic who has said that the loss of life in Syria is acceptable. Not one person here has said "Yeah, those people dying in a civil war, whatever." Just because you haven't noticed the topics made about the conflict in Syria over longer than a year's stretch doesn't mean we haven't been talking about this. One topic is made about the destruction of artifacts older than any of us can trace our own lineage and suddenly you act like we simply don't care about Syrians and only property. This is not the case.

You say somebody would be messed up to kill a hostile man with a gun, I say that man must be messed up to risk his own life to destroy a "piece of clay". If some crazy man is willing to point a gun then he should own up to the consequences.

I agree. Ban guns.

Life > things.

bsballa: 1,000+ Palestinians murdered in Gaza by Israel in Operation Cast Lead = A-OK. A synagogue being destroyed in the midst of a violent civil war = OH THE HUMANITY! WHAT ATROCIOUS BARBARIANS!

Zionists are a joke.

Nobody has said that, but here's what they have said, tell me how many times they've cried this loudly about death.

Few things sicken me more than stuff like this. I was SO pissed when the terrorists in Mali looted and destroyed tons of ancient buildings and artifacts in Timbuktu.

Yeah, destroying historical landmarks like that is one of the worst crimes you can commit on this planet. Something that just pisses me off to no end.

I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of this (it upsets me, too), I just did a bit of a double-take when I saw it specifically described as barbarism.

I re-read what I wrote, and I hope you didn't think I was talking to or offending you. I meant I hate how casually these terrorist and rioters treat ancient artifacts, not you, which I think is what you thought I meant.

I find it offensive that you not only claim to speak for me, but get it dead wrong. I've complained about plenty of different deaths in my fair of topics here. However, death is a common thing, that happens all the time and has little inherit value if I have no connection to it. Seeing a body count number for an armed conflict is always sad, but it's only a number if you don't have the ability to encapture the gravity of it. Well-known historical sites can easily gain such an attachment, and while killing other people could be just or unjust depending on a point of view, there's literally no way to justify mindlessly destorying ancient stuff.

Of course, that's a personal bias/pet peeve of mine, but don't you dare say I've never had such qualms with a loss of life on this board.

It's just one of many historical sites in Syria that have been annihilated by fighting. Welcome to war.
