Activists, UN raise concerns about the future of "killer robots" and "smart" gun

While I agree the automated weapon systems already in place shouldn't be a cause of alarm, we are starting to lurch closer to an age where humans play a very minimal role in the equation of war. I do think that trying to impose any laws or restrictions now might be bad, but we should, indeed, be having a conversation on the limits of such technonlogy.

On that note, (slightly old), meet the "smart" sniper rifle.

Someone who has never even shot a gun before can hit a target dead-on at about 700 yards, simply because the gun works like a fighter jet's HUD, in that it "locks" onto a target, accounts for wind, himidity, bullet trajectory, and human shaking, and doesn't fire, even after a trigger pull, until it lines up sights with the lock on.

You'd think the documentary series "Terminator" would make people savvy enough to ensure this doesn't happen.

I have no problem with deploying fully autonomous killing machines against our enemies. Machines can be rebuild, our current soldiers can't.

Good hopefully we will reach a point where war is so destructive and expensive nobody follows through with it.

Machines can get hacked, though. And if you're relying on an AI to control the damn things then it's either too stupid to get things done right or it's too smart to be trusted with anything.

Good hopefully we will reach a point where war is so destructive and expensive nobody follows through with it.

And when we get to that point, the next Hitler can massacre as many people in as creative ways as he damn well wants and nobody can do a god damn thing about it. Yaaay!! Hurrah!! What a blessed time that will be!!

Drones aren't any different than any other aspect of asymmetric war.

However, fully automated killbots => Teh bad. There should always be a human behind the wheel if there's potential for killing.

But of course, seeing things from a satellite puts things an awfully long way away. Spec Ops the Line, anyone?
