Basic income provisions lead to good decision making in Canada and India...

India is the most recent study:

http://mondediplo.com/2013/05/04income

Basically, a number of poor villages were given a basic, flat income, regardless of anything aside from being poor (gender, caste, etc.) in order to answer a question many people have: Would the poor spend free money on booze and jewelry, or on bettering their lives? The answer was the latter.

Studies at the beginning, mid-point and end of the project confirmed that, in villages receiving payments, people spent more on eggs, meat and fish, and on healthcare. Children’s school marks improved in 68% of families, and the time they spent at school nearly tripled. Saving also tripled, and twice as many people were able to start a new business.

Much older study in Canada, roughly same results:

The same experiment was run in Canada in the 1970s, with the same results.

People still went to work. They still did productive things for society. There was no more or less substance abuse or crime. People didn't drink more. They just had less worries about health care and basic needs.

Now the big question is why doesn't it work for America? Culture? Drug use? Demographics?

Because Americans are mavericks and we do what we want.

Wait?

They only tried this experiment TWICE? And that's it?

One of the experiments being in the so called socialist CANADA?

And the TC is trying to pass this off as some kind of meta-topic about American culture?

richard nixon proposed something like this back in the 70s - look up negative income tax

milton friedman also advocated it with the caveat that it should replace most of the welfare state - that's a compromise i think a lot of people would be amenable to

The obvious limitation of the India study is the duration. Much as we see entrepreneurship and academic achievement collapse for the children of immigrants, I would have to wonder if we would not see a similar trend were this Basic income to become a permanent fact of life.
